In a collaborative effort, tech giants Apple and Google are nearing the release of an innovative anti-stalking technology designed to combat the misuse of Bluetooth location-tracking devices. This development comes amidst growing concerns about the potential for trackers, such as Apple's AirTags and Tile, to be used for unauthorized monitoring of someone's location.

Noted tech tipster Mishaal Rahman recently discovered a specification titled "Detecting Unwanted Location Trackers" that has been filed at the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF), indicating that the spec's release is imminent. The industry-wide initiative, which also involves companies like Samsung and Tile, was announced earlier this year to address the misuse of Bluetooth tracking devices.

Version 01 of the "Detecting Unwanted Location Trackers" specification has recently been uploaded to the IETF, showcasing the ongoing joint efforts of Apple and Google. Already, Google has implemented unwanted tracker alerts in Android devices earlier this year, offering users timely notifications if an unrecognized tracker is near them and traveling alongside them.

Creating a Bluetooth tracker that can accurately locate personal belongings without enabling the tracking of someone else's location has proven challenging. However, tech companies have been actively working to improve the safety of their tracking devices. Apple has consistently introduced updates for AirTags, making it easier to identify nearby trackers that do not belong to the user. Similarly, Google has implemented comparable features in Android, and Tile has made significant efforts to prevent the misuse of their trackers for unauthorized location monitoring.

Although these updates have been welcomed, they have not provided a comprehensive solution across all phone brands and tracker models. The upcoming "Detecting Unwanted Location Trackers" spec aims to address this issue by incorporating seamless functionality into future versions of Android and iOS.

Once implemented, this cutting-edge technology will ensure that users receive prompt alerts whenever an unregistered tracker is in close proximity, regardless of the phone brand or tracking device used. The collaboration between Apple and Google, alongside the support from other industry players, promises to enhance user privacy and security in the realm of Bluetooth location tracking.

As the world eagerly anticipates the release of this joint effort, tech enthusiasts and concerned individuals can look forward to the arrival of an advanced anti-stalking tech solution that will protect against unwanted location tracking.
