Akai Introduces MPC Key 37: A Compact Standalone Workstation and Groovebox
ICARO Media Group
Akai has recently unveiled its latest addition to the MPC lineup - the MPC Key 37. This new standalone workstation and groovebox offer musicians a comprehensive tool for creating beats and songs without the need for a computer and digital audio workstation (DAW). Priced at $900, the MPC Key 37 brings a range of features and functionalities that make it an attractive option for music producers.
One of the notable features of the MPC Key 37 is its 37 full-size keys, complete with aftertouch. This is a unique offering, as there are not many standalone devices with a full keybed on the market. This feature makes it particularly appealing to musicians who may lack familiarity with Akai-style pads.
In addition to the keys, the MPC Key 37 also incorporates 16 velocity-sensitive pads, allowing users to lay down drum parts and trigger samples with ease. This combination of keys and pads creates a versatile and intuitive music-making experience.
Storage capacity is also a crucial aspect of any standalone device, and the MPC Key 37 offers ample space with its 32GB of onboard storage. However, it's worth noting that the operating system and included sound packs utilize 10GB of this storage. To address this limitation, the MPC Key 37 includes an SD card slot for expanding the storage capacity, which is often necessary given the speed at which these devices can fill up.
The device features a 7-inch multi-touch display and four assignable Q-Link knobs, providing users with easy access to system adjustments and control over effects plugins. While the layout of the MPC Key 37 resembles its larger predecessor, the Key 61, it is slightly less powerful, with 2GB of RAM compared to 4GB in the Key 61. This difference may impact the number of tracks that can be played simultaneously without experiencing any performance issues.
In terms of connectivity, the MPC Key 37 offers stereo 1/4-inch inputs and outputs, USB Midi, 5-pin MIDI In/MIDI Out, 4 TRS CV/Gate output jacks, a USB host port, as well as Bluetooth and WiFi capabilities for wireless streaming via platforms like Ableton Link.
The software bundled with the MPC Key 37 is an essential component of the device. It comes with Akai's MPC2 desktop software and standalone suite, providing users with a range of instrument plugins. Additionally, the package includes a voucher for a premium plug from Akai's extensive collection.
While the MPC Key 37 may not offer all the advanced features of its predecessor, the Key 61, it comes at around half the price. Priced at $900, this new addition to the MPC lineup is now available for purchase through parent company inMusic and authorized retailers.
With its compact size, expansive features, and standalone capabilities, the Akai MPC Key 37 is sure to find its place among musicians and producers looking for a versatile and portable music-making solution.
