In a disappointing turn of events, quarterback Mitchell Trubisky's return to the starting lineup for the Pittsburgh Steelers did not yield the desired results. After rookie Kenny Pickett suffered an ankle injury in Week 13, Trubisky stepped in but failed to lead the team to victory. The Steelers ultimately turned to Mason Rudolph, who went on to win all three of his starts, securing Pittsburgh's playoff berth.
Trubisky's initial stint in Pittsburgh was marked by inconsistency and underwhelming performances. The former UNC product went 2-5 as the starter, completing 64.1% of his passes for 1,884 yards, eight touchdowns, and 10 interceptions. By Week 5 of the 2022 season, Pickett had taken over as the starting quarterback, relegating Trubisky to the sidelines.
In the 2023 season, fate handed Trubisky another opportunity when Pickett sustained an ankle injury against the Arizona Cardinals. However, Trubisky failed to make the most of it, as the Steelers lost both games during his two starts. Trubisky's stats for those games were 359 yards passing, two touchdowns, and three interceptions.
The Steelers' decision to replace Trubisky with Rudolph proved to be the turning point for the team's season. Rudolph's leadership and performance propelled the team to a 3-0 record, securing their place in the playoffs.
Trubisky's football journey began when he was selected as the second overall pick by the Chicago Bears in the 2017 NFL Draft. However, after a mixed tenure with the Bears, where he went 29-21 as a starter, Trubisky parted ways with the team and joined the Steelers as a free agent.
Meanwhile, the Buffalo Bills have been busy making moves in the front office ahead of the upcoming free agency period. In addition to reacquiring Trubisky, the Bills have also made significant changes, including parting ways with six players, such as Jordan Poyer and Tre'Davious White. The team has also restructured two contracts, including that of Von Miller. Furthermore, the Bills reportedly decided to re-sign safety Taylor Rapp before the start of free agency next week.
As the Steelers gear up for their playoff campaign with Rudolph leading the charge, Trubisky's future remains uncertain. With his recent struggles on the field, teams may approach the quarterback's free agency with caution. Only time will tell if Trubisky can regain his form and find success in the NFL once again.
