In a dramatic turn of events at the Bahrain Grand Prix, Daniel Ricciardo expressed his frustration towards his Red Bull teammate, Yuki Tsunoda, for his "immature" behavior following a near collision on the cool-down lap. Max Verstappen clinched victory in the race.
As the cars made their way back to the pits after the race, Tsunoda aggressively overtook Ricciardo's car at Turn 8, narrowly avoiding a collision. Ricciardo, who had been adjusting settings on his dashboard with one hand on the wheel, was taken aback by Tsunoda's reckless move.
"What the f---?! I'll save it. He's a f------ helmet!" an angry Ricciardo exclaimed over the team radio immediately after the incident. However, Ricciardo had seemingly calmed down by the time he faced the media afterwards.
While discussing the incident, Ricciardo acknowledged Tsunoda's reputation for being hot-headed but emphasized the need for a cooperative approach within the team. "I'm thinking long-term," expressed Ricciardo. "We need to be able to work together, so I'm not going to come in there with an angry attitude."
The disagreement stemmed from Red Bull's decision to implement team orders and have the drivers swap positions. Tsunoda, visibly upset, questioned the decision over the team radio, exclaiming, "Are you kidding me now?"
This clash further highlights Tsunoda's ongoing struggles with maintaining composure and has contributed to reservations from Red Bull's Christian Horner and Helmut Marko about promoting him to the senior team. Tsunoda, known for his impetuousness since his debut in 2021, needs to address these temperament issues to secure a more prominent role within the team.
Ricciardo clarified that the possibility of a swap had been discussed among the team before the race, given his choice of using a softer tire towards the end. He expected a pace advantage and anticipated the swap, making Tsunoda's reluctance all the more frustrating.
"It was very likely I was going to use a soft at the end of the race," shared Ricciardo. "So he knew that there was a chance that I would have a pace advantage...at least give us the best chance to get at least one car in the points."
Looking ahead, both drivers, along with the team, are set to have a meeting to address the incident in a mature manner as they prepare for the upcoming race in Jeddah.
With a long season ahead, it is crucial for Red Bull to foster a harmonious team environment and ensure that all drivers work collaboratively to maximize their chances of success on the track.
