In an unfortunate turn of events, the Boston Red Sox will have to wait even longer for second baseman Vaughn Grissom to make his official debut with the team. Red Sox manager Alex Cora revealed that Grissom has been sidelined by a groin strain, casting doubts on his availability for the season opener on March 28 in Seattle.
Grissom's first spring training camp in a Red Sox uniform has been far from memorable, as he has been unable to participate in any Grapefruit League action due to a prior hamstring problem. With the addition of the groin strain, it appears likely that Grissom will start the season on the 10-day injured list, requiring time to both recover and get back to full readiness for regular-season games.
The Red Sox had high hopes for Grissom when they acquired him in a headline-grabbing trade with the Atlanta Braves. In exchange for star pitcher Chris Sale and $17 million in salary coverage, the Red Sox brought in Grissom, aiming to address the team's longstanding weakness at second base. Controlled through the 2029 season, the young infielder was seen as a long-term solution for Boston.
Grissom's rapid rise through the ranks has been impressive, considering he was only an 11th-round pick in the 2019 draft for the Braves. Despite the setback of the canceled 2020 minor league season, Grissom showcased his potential by hitting .291/.353/.440 over 156 plate appearances in his 41-game stint with the Braves in 2022.
However, Grissom found himself battling for playing time in 2023, as Orlando Arcia assumed the everyday shortstop role. Consequently, Grissom spent most of last season at Triple-A Gwinnett, where he continued to perform well at the plate. In limited major league appearances, he maintained a decent stat line of .280/.313/.347 over 80 plate appearances.
In Grissom's absence, Cora mentioned that Enmanuel Valdez is the frontrunner to fill the second base position. Other players, such as Pablo Reyes, Rob Refsnyder, Romy Gonzalez, or Bobby Dalbec, could also be given opportunities to contribute in Grissom's place. Considering the situation, the Red Sox may continue their search for a middle-infield type to further strengthen their depth.
As the Red Sox prepare for the upcoming season, the injury setback to Vaughn Grissom serves as a reminder of the unpredictability of the game. The team hopes for a speedy recovery for Grissom and looks forward to his eventual return to the field, where he can showcase his talents and solidify his place as a key contributor for years to come.
