In a surprising development, Tampa Bay Rays' shortstop Wander Franco has been placed on administrative leave through June 1 amidst an ongoing investigation into an alleged relationship with an underage girl, according to a source. The administrative leave was agreed upon by Major League Baseball (MLB) and the MLB Players Association, effectively removing Franco from the 40-man roster.

Franco, who has not been with the team since August, is yet to be charged with a crime. The allegations of a sexual relationship with a 14-year-old girl became public last year, prompting his initial placement on administrative leave. The young shortstop did not participate in the spring training, instead staying in his native Dominican Republic, where he is currently being investigated for allegations of sexual and psychological abuse.

Despite the ongoing investigation, Franco continues to be paid as he remains on administrative leave. This decision followed a discussion about whether Franco should be placed on the restricted list, which could have impacted his pay. As part of his 11-year, $182 million contract signed in 2021, Franco is set to earn $2 million this year with a relatively low base salary. He is still owed approximately $175 million.

The Tampa Bay Times has reported that the administrative leave may be extended if there are no updates in the investigation by the deadline. Meanwhile, MLB is expected to wait until the investigation concludes before deciding on any further disciplinary action.

The timing of this administrative leave is significant, as it coincided with the Rays' season opener against the Blue Jays. Franco's absence from the roster required the team to make necessary adjustments prior to the game.

23-year-old Franco, who emerged as one of the Rays' standout players, recorded an impressive .819 OPS last season, hitting 17 home runs, accumulating 58 RBIs, and stealing 30 bases. His absence will undoubtedly leave a void in the lineup as the Rays look to kick-start their 2023 season.

As the investigation into Wander Franco's alleged relationship with an underage girl continues, the baseball world eagerly awaits updates and further developments regarding his status.
