According to a report from Rob Maaddi, the Philadelphia Eagles had expressed interest in bringing South Jersey native Joe Flacco back to Philly before he recently signed with the Indianapolis Colts. Flacco, who turned 39 in January, had an impressive comeback season with the Cleveland Browns, earning him the NFL Comeback Player of the Year honors.
However, due to the Browns being committed to Deshaun Watson's massive contract, they decided not to re-sign Flacco. The veteran quarterback has now reunited with Colts head coach Shane Steichen, who previously worked as his offensive coordinator for half a season in Philadelphia.
Flacco's signing with the Colts raises questions about the Eagles' backup quarterback situation. The fact that they made an offer to Flacco suggests that they are not solely relying on the 2023 sixth-round pick Tanner McKee to fill the role, especially after losing Marcus Mariota.
There have been rumors circulating that the Eagles could potentially trade for Justin Fields to secure the QB2 position. Another viable option could be Easton Stick, who had previously worked with the Eagles' new offensive coordinator, Kellen Moore, and new quarterbacks coach, Doug Nussmeier, last year.
With Flacco's signing with the Colts and the Eagles exploring other options, it remains to be seen who will ultimately occupy the backup quarterback position for the Philadelphia Eagles in the upcoming season. The team's decision may have significant implications for their depth and preparedness at the quarterback position.
