New York Rangers Acquire Nic Petan from Minnesota Wild for Turner Elson

Petan, a 28-year-old player, has had a productive 2023-24 season, splitting his time between the NHL's Minnesota Wild and the Iowa Wild of the American Hockey League (AHL). With Iowa, Petan showcased his skills by recording an impressive 40 points consisting of 12 goals and 28 assists, ranking him first on the team in points and assists, and third in goals. His exceptional performance earned him a selection to the 2024 AHL All-Star Classic. In Minnesota, Petan has contributed two assists in six games.
Throughout his career, the 5-9, 175-pound forward has played 170 NHL games, representing teams such as the Wild, Vancouver Canucks, Toronto Maple Leafs, and Winnipeg Jets. In these games, Petan tallied seven goals and 28 assists for a total of 35 points. His most notable season came in 2016-17 with the Jets when he achieved a career-high 12 assists and 13 points.
Originally from Delta, British Columbia, Petan has also displayed his skills in the AHL, playing 281 career games over eight seasons for Iowa, Abbotsford, Toronto, and Manitoba. In these games, he recorded an impressive 281 points (92G-189A). Last season with Iowa, Petan excelled, setting career-highs in goals (23), assists (39), and points (62).
Before turning pro, Petan enjoyed a successful five-year career with the Portland Winterhawks of the Western Hockey League (WHL). In 252 games, he notched an impressive 358 points (110G-248A). Petan's exceptional performance led him to rank second in scoring in the WHL in 2013-14, with 113 points (35G-78A) in 63 games, and tied for first in scoring in 2012-13, with 120 points (46G-74A) in 71 games.
Petan's talent and accomplishments led to his selection by the Winnipeg Jets in the second round, 43rd overall, of the 2013 NHL Draft.
