In an official announcement today, Chris Drury, President and General Manager of the New York Rangers, revealed that the team has successfully acquired forward Alex Wennberg from the Seattle Kraken. The deal was made in exchange for the Rangers' own second-round selection in the 2024 NHL Draft and a conditional fourth-round selection in the 2025 NHL Draft, originally owned by the Dallas Stars.
Wennberg, a 29-year-old forward, has had an impressive season with the Kraken, tallying nine goals and 16 assists, resulting in a total of 25 points through 60 games. His exceptional skills have made him a key player, leading Seattle with four game-winning goals, while also displaying his defensive prowess with 65 blocked shots, ranking first among the team's forwards. He currently holds the seventh position on the scoring leaderboard for the Kraken.
With a career spanning ten seasons across the Kraken, Florida Panthers, and Columbus Blue Jackets, the 6-foot-2, 190-pound native of Stockholm, Sweden, has showcased his talent in the NHL. In 693 career NHL games, Wennberg has accumulated an impressive record of 90 goals and 240 assists, summing up to a total of 330 points. Notably, he tied for the second highest number of goals in his career last season, recording 13, and had the third-highest scoring season with 38 points. Additionally, he achieved a career-high of four power play goals during that season.
During his time with the Blue Jackets in the 2016-17 season, Wennberg shone brightly by notching a career-high 46 assists and 59 points. He has also contributed significantly to the Kraken's playoff campaign, with a total of 42 playoff games under his belt, during which he registered seven goals and 10 assists, leading to 17 points. In the most recent postseason run with the Kraken, Wennberg made his presence felt by tallying seven points, including 2 goals and 5 assists, in 14 games.
In terms of international experience, Wennberg played a vital role in helping Sweden secure second place at the IIHF World Junior Championship in both 2013 and 2014. His contributions were instrumental in the team's success on the global stage.
Wennberg's promising career started when he was drafted by the Columbus Blue Jackets in the first round, 14th overall, of the 2013 NHL Entry Draft. Since then, he has established himself as a key player in the league and continues to be a coveted asset for teams looking to strengthen their lineup.
The addition of Alex Wennberg to the New York Rangers' roster is expected to provide a boost to the team's offense and add depth to their lineup. Rangers fans eagerly await his debut in the iconic blue and red jersey as he joins the team for the upcoming season.
