In preparation for the upcoming 2024 NFL Draft, the New York Jets have shifted their focus towards bolstering their offense, according to a recent seven-round mock draft. General manager Joe Douglas has prioritized filling the team's needs through free agency, providing them with flexibility as they approach the draft.
One area of concern for the Jets is their offensive line, despite the acquisition of starting tackles Morgan Moses and Tyron Smith during free agency. Both Moses and Smith, aged 33, have raised questions about their durability due to recent injuries. Consequently, the mock draft suggests the Jets should consider selecting an offensive tackle. While Notre Dame's Joe Alt was unavailable in this simulation, alternatives such as Olu Fashanu from Penn State or JC Latham from Alabama were potential options. There is also increasing interest in Washington's Troy Fautanu, although some teams might view him as a guard.
Additionally, the Jets have expressed interest in adding depth to their receiving corps, as owner Woody Johnson's emphasis on offense continues. Although top wide receivers Marvin Harrison, Rome Odunze, and Malik Nabers, as well as tight end Brock Bowers, were not available in the simulation, the Jets added Mike Williams through free agency. Nonetheless, with Williams turning 30 this season and returning from ACL surgery, the Jets are still seeking a long-term solution. In the mock draft, wide receiver Walker, known for his speed and ability to stretch the field, was selected to provide a vertical threat in the offense.
To strengthen their running back room, the Jets look to complement the return of Breece Hall, who is expected to have a standout season after recovering from ACL surgery. While rookie Israel Abanikanda has shown promise, the Jets still need to add depth. In the mock draft, running back Estime was chosen to fulfill the role of a bruising, short-yardage back and complement the styles of the other two running backs.
One intriguing aspect of the Jets' draft strategy revolves around the possibility of selecting a quarterback. Despite having Aaron Rodgers and Tyrod Taylor as their primary signal-callers, the team could benefit from grooming a developmental quarterback for the future. In this mock draft, Travis, an intriguing prospect who suffered a serious leg injury last season, was deemed a potential steal if selected.
As the draft nears its end, the Jets turn their attention to bolstering their defense. With specific needs at safety and a desire for improved special teams performance, the team aims to add depth in these areas. The Jets possess the final two picks in the draft, with the second-to-last selection focused on a linebacker, who can contribute to both special teams and provide youth to the linebacker room.
As the actual 2024 NFL Draft approaches, it remains to be seen if the New York Jets will follow a similar draft strategy or deviate from the mock draft's recommendations. Fans eagerly await the team's decisions as they look to build a stronger roster and elevate their offense from the bottom of the NFL rankings.
