In a setback for the LA Clippers, star forward Kawhi Leonard was forced to leave the game against the Minnesota Timberwolves due to back spasms. The injury occurred during the first half of Tuesday's 118-100 home loss at Crypto.com Arena.
Leonard played the entire first quarter and contributed six points, two rebounds, and two assists on 2-for-4 shooting. However, he was seen leaving the arena during the second quarter, as the Clippers announced his departure was due to back spasms.
According to Clippers coach Tyronn Lue, Leonard had been dealing with back issues in recent days but was determined to play against the Wolves. Lue revealed that Leonard had received treatment and participated in the shootaround before the game, but unfortunately, his back did not loosen up during play.
ESPN's Ohm Youngmisuk reported that Leonard chose to leave the arena and rest at home rather than endure discomfort in the building. Lue expressed uncertainty about Leonard's involvement in the team's upcoming road trip, which includes a game against the Chicago Bulls on Thursday.
This injury comes in the midst of a relatively healthy season for Leonard, who has appeared in 58 out of 63 games. With an average of 23.7 points, 6.2 rebounds, 3.7 assists, and 1.7 steals per game, Leonard has been a crucial contributor to the Clippers' success this season.
The Clippers currently hold a 41-23 record and are in contention for the top spot in the Western Conference. They trail the Oklahoma City Thunder by 3 1/2 games for the first seed and are half a game behind the Timberwolves, who hold the third seed. However, the team's recent performance since the All-Star break has been inconsistent, with a 5-6 record.
The loss to the Timberwolves marks the first time this season that the Clippers played without Leonard and fellow star Paul George, both of whom have each missed six games. Last season, they were without both All-Stars for 12 games, going 3-9 during that stretch.
As the Clippers navigate through a challenging schedule, with four of their next five games being on the road, the uncertainty surrounding Leonard's availability is a cause for concern. His presence on the court is vital for the team's success, and his absence could impact their pursuit of the top seed in the conference.
The Clippers will closely monitor Leonard's recovery and make a decision regarding his involvement in the upcoming road trip. Fans will be hoping for a quick return of their star forward as the Clippers aim to maintain their position among the conference's elite teams.
