The Kansas City Chiefs, back-to-back Super Bowl champions, have made a surprising move by signing rugby star Louis Rees-Zammit. According to Bleacher Report, Rees-Zammit will be listed as a wide receiver/running back on the team's roster and the Chiefs are considering using him on kickoffs.
The 23-year-old Welsh player reportedly impressed Kansas City during a recent workout, and he also visited with the Jets, Browns, and Broncos, as reported by Bleacher Report. Rees-Zammit, dubbed "by far the biggest rugby star" attempting to transition to the NFL by ESPN, previously played for England's Gloucester before announcing his plans to play in the NFL in February.
In an Instagram post, Rees-Zammit expressed his excitement about joining the NFL's International Pathway Program (IPP) and striving to earn a spot on an NFL roster in the United States for the 2024 season. He clarified that this decision does not necessarily mean he is retiring from rugby but rather an opportunity to explore a unique challenge and diversify his skillset.
The International Player Pathway Program, established in 2017, aims to assist foreign-born football players in reaching the NFL. It currently boasts 18 NFL players, including Jordan Mailata of the Philadelphia Eagles. In an IPP Pro Day, Rees-Zammit showcased remarkable athleticism with a 4.43-second 40-yard dash, a nine-feet, seven-inch broad jump, and a 29-inch vertical jump, according to ESPN.
Rees-Zammit disclosed to ESPN that his favorite NFL player is former Philadelphia Eagles star DeSean Jackson. The new kickoff rules implemented by the NFL, which seek to increase returns, can potentially capitalize on Rees-Zammit's rugby background, as there are similarities between the two sports in kickoff returns.
Joining a Chiefs team that lacked consistent production from its skill positions, aside from standout players such as Travis Kelce, Rashee Rice, and Isiah Pacheco, Rees-Zammit brings a fresh perspective and talent to the roster. The Chiefs also bolstered their wide receiver corps in the offseason by adding Marquise "Hollywood" Brown in free agency.
The signing of Louis Rees-Zammit showcases the Chiefs' innovative approach to utilize his rugby skills and athleticism in an unconventional manner. It will be intriguing to see how the Welsh rugby star adapts to the NFL and if he can make an impact on special teams and beyond in the upcoming season.
