In a devastating blow to an already struggling Detroit Pistons team, rookie wing Ausar Thompson will miss the remainder of the season as he undergoes treatment for a blood clot, the team announced on Wednesday. Thompson's absence further compounds the woes of the Pistons, who are poised to finish with their worst record in franchise history.
Thompson's health concerns surfaced during Detroit's game against the Dallas Mavericks on March 9 when he was forced to leave the court after just 11 minutes of play due to what was initially categorized as an "illness". Subsequently, the team's injury report included an additional designation of "asthma" for Thompson prior to their following game.
While the rookie has been cleared for conditioning, he will begin non-contact basketball activities only after the conclusion of the regular season. Pistons coach Monty Williams expressed relief that Thompson's condition was detected early, stating, "I'm just glad the doctors caught it. From all of the information that I've gotten, they're handling it... It's a medical situation, but I'm glad they caught it."
Thompson, who was the No. 5 pick in the NBA Draft last year, has been one of the few bright spots for the struggling Pistons team, who currently hold a disappointing 12-56 record. Known for his defensive prowess, Thompson has been a standout performer on that end of the court, often tasked with guarding the opposition's toughest assignments. His abilities as a wing defender have drawn rave reviews, making him a promising asset for the franchise's future.
Offensively, Thompson has showcased his skills as a finisher at the rim and has been a highlight reel in transition, although his 3-point shooting remains an area for improvement. Prior to his medical issue, Thompson was on track to be the only Pistons player to participate in all 82 games this season.
Unfortunately for the Pistons, Thompson is not the only player they will be without for the remainder of the season. The team also announced that starter Isaiah Stewart will miss the rest of the year with a hamstring strain sustained in Monday's game against the Boston Celtics.
Thompson's absence will undoubtedly be felt on both ends of the court for the Pistons, as they cope with an already challenging season. While the rookie's statistics of 25 minutes per game, 8.8 points, 6.4 rebounds, 1.1 steals, and 0.9 blocks on 48.3 percent shooting from the field may not stand out, his impact on the team has been significant.
As the Pistons navigate the remainder of their season, they face an uphill battle without the defensive prowess and promising potential of Ausar Thompson, whose presence will be sorely missed.
