In what Detroit Lions general manager Brad Holmes described as their best free agency period since he joined the team, the Lions successfully landed all of their "Plan A" targets. Holmes expressed his satisfaction with the outcome, stating that the team was able to acquire every single one of their top targets through strategic planning and execution.

While the Lions didn't make headline-grabbing signings during this free agency period, Holmes believes they were able to accomplish virtually everything they set out to do. This included a determined effort to revamp the cornerback position, which led them to target Carlton Davis, whom they had observed closely in their previous matches against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2023.

The Lions reached out to the Buccaneers, recognizing that they were likely to release one of their young cornerbacks. As they worked with contract experts Brandon Sosna and Mike Disner to manage Davis' $14 million cap hit for 2024, the team also focused their attention on undervalued Amik Robertson, creating an either/or situation. Ultimately, the Lions found a way to make both acquisitions a reality, with Robertson expressing enthusiasm for his opportunity to compete in Detroit.

This unexpected success in landing both Robertson and Davis, in addition to re-signing Emmanuel Moseley on a one-year deal, allowed the Lions to absorb the news of releasing Cameron Sutton following a warrant for his arrest. Holmes views this as a blessing, as the team now possesses a competitive cornerback group.

While the Lions continue to search for another cornerback, their ideal situation materialized on the offensive line. Negotiations with Jonah Jackson lasted until the previous season, but with a change in course during the offseason, the Lions aimed to retain versatile guard Graham Glasgow while securing Kevin Zeitler to fill the void left by Jackson's departure. Although it took time to secure the 34-year-old Zeitler, the Lions were thrilled to again hit their "Plan A" target.

Taking their defensive line to the next level, the Lions made notable upgrades with DJ Reader and Marcus Davenport. Reader, in particular, impressed Holmes with his underappreciated pass-rushing skills alongside his elite run defending abilities. Davenport, an athletic and explosive player, compliments Aidan Hutchinson well and adds diversity to the Lions' defensive scheme.

Despite successfully signing their desired external targets, the Lions are still in negotiations to bring back receiver Josh Reynolds, who was their number two receiver last season. Holmes confirmed that ongoing discussions are underway, but as of now, Reynolds remains the only player still awaiting a deal.

The Lions' success in securing every top target during this free agency period reflects the meticulous planning, efficient execution, and strategic decision-making of their front office. As the team prepares for the upcoming season, the Lions are poised to make significant strides with an improved roster that addresses key areas of concern.
