According to CBS Sports lead NFL insider Jonathan Jones, Patterson is set to sign a two-year contract worth $6 million with the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Patterson, known as one of the greatest return men in league history, has an impressive track record. Throughout his 11-year career, Patterson has led the NFL in yards per kick return three times, total kick return yardage twice, and kick return touchdowns six times. However, in recent seasons, his return opportunities have been limited due to rule changes that increased touchbacks and introduced fair catches. Over the last three seasons, Patterson has only had 34 returns, after returning a league-high 35 kicks for 1,017 yards in 2020.

With the new kickoff rules coming into effect in 2024, Patterson's role is expected to change, and the Steelers stand to benefit. Under the updated rules, the kicking team will consist of 21 out of the 22 players on the field, while the kicker will set up the ball at their own 35-yard line. Once the ball is in play, the kicker is not allowed to cross midfield until the returner catches or fields the ball. Meanwhile, the coverage team will line up at the receiving team's 40-yard line, with each player required to have one foot on the 40-yard line before the play starts.

As for the receiving team, most of their players will be positioned at the 35-yard line, with a 5-yard setup zone extending from their own 30 to the 35-yard line. The receiving team will also have the option to field one or two returners, with the additional player positioned in the setup zone. These changes are intended to increase the number of returns while maintaining player safety.

Patterson's explosive return abilities make him an exciting addition to the Steelers' roster. His versatility as a running back and wide receiver adds value to the team, who recently traded Diontae Johnson and are in need of pass-catching help. Despite the presence of promising backs like Najee Harris and Jaylen Warren, Patterson brings a different skill set to the table.

With his knack for making big plays, Patterson is poised to take advantage of the increased return opportunities. Steelers fans can expect plenty of excitement when Patterson gets the chance to showcase his skills once again.
