In an announcement made during the annual league meeting on Monday, Cleveland Browns owners Jimmy and Dee Haslam revealed that they are exploring two possibilities for upgrading their stadium. The options on the table include renovating the existing Cleveland Browns Stadium on the city's waterfront or constructing a new domed stadium in Brook Park, Ohio.
Speaking to the media, Jimmy Haslam emphasized that they are seriously considering both alternatives. He mentioned that the existing stadium could undergo an extensive remodel, while a new dome could be built in Brook Park, conveniently located near the Browns' facility in Berea and Cleveland Hopkins International Airport. Haslam indicated that a domed stadium could potentially be utilized for more than the current 12 annual games.
The Browns have a longstanding history on the shores of Lake Erie, having initially played at Cleveland Municipal Stadium until 1995. The stadium was subsequently razed to make way for Cleveland Browns Stadium, which opened upon the franchise's return in 1999.
Dee Haslam, also present at the meeting, acknowledged that addressing the concerns of their fans was a crucial factor in their decision-making process. She highlighted the difficulties associated with accessing and parking at the waterfront stadium, prompting them to explore alternative options. Dee Haslam expressed excitement about the prospect of constructing a transformative domed stadium, which could propel the area forward. She emphasized that both options are being carefully considered and that neither takes precedence over the other.
Although the Brook Park site has not yet been acquired, the Browns have the opportunity to purchase it. Previously, the location was home to two Ford Motor plants. Jimmy Haslam took the opportunity to assure fans that, regardless of the stadium decision, the franchise has no intentions of relocating. He reiterated their commitment to Northeastern Ohio, emphasizing that they view the region as the team's permanent home.
As the Browns and their owners continue their deliberations, the upcoming months will likely see further developments in their pursuit of a state-of-the-art stadium facility. With the potential for either a remodeled waterfront stadium or a brand-new domed venue, Cleveland sports enthusiasts can anticipate an exciting future for their beloved team and the city as a whole.
