In a thrilling Major League Soccer matchup on June 25, 2023 at the PayPal Park in San Jose, California, St. Louis City managed to best the home team, the SJ Earthquakes, in a tense 2-1 victory.

The first half saw St. Louis City take the lead, courtesy of Samuel Adeniran's strike in the 41st minute on an assist from Rasmus Alm. The Earthquakes were left to trail behind as the half time score read 0-1.

The Earthquakes weren't about to give in without a fight though. They bounced back soon into the second half, leveling the score in the 47th minute when Jamiro Monteiro found the back of the net thanks to an assist from Jackson Yueill. However, St. Louis City soon struck back and reclaimed the lead in the 58th minute. Adeniran again caused trouble for the Earthquakes, this time securing the winning goal.

The Earthquakes made several substitutions in an attempt to swing the momentum in their favor but to little avail. Carlos Gruezo was replaced by N. Tsakiris in the 83rd minute who later was shown a yellow card. The St. Louis City side also made numerous changes, with notable substitutions including Aziel Jackson replaced by N. Gioacchini and Samuel Adeniran giving way to T. Ostrák. Both incoming players later received yellow cards in the tail end of the match.

The match thread feedback from social media reflected the electrifying nature of the match. Fans admired goalkeeper Roman Bürki's performance with one fan noting "Burki is the difference between us being a contender and being bottom table. Yeesh." Others were considerate of the young players who had uneven performances, specifically naming Miguel Perez of St. Louis City.

As for the venue, some fans opined that PayPal Park could seem strange on TV but it's actually a good spot to catch a game in person. Some criticism was raised about people at the match spending too much time at the bar instead of focusing on the field action.

Both SJ Earthquakes and St. Louis City will hopefully take valuable lessons from this match into their next games on July 2, 2023. The Earthquakes will host LA Galaxy at home while St. Louis City will welcome Colorado Rapids. Soccer fans, mark your calendars!
