Japanese billionaire Yusaku Maezawa has announced the cancellation of his much-anticipated SpaceX Starship mission to fly around the Moon. The flight, named dearMoon, was initially planned to take place in 2023 with eight artists on board, but due to the ongoing development and uncertainty surrounding the launch of the Starship, Maezawa has decided to call off the mission.
The announcement was made on Friday through the official dearMoon Twitter account, followed by posts from Maezawa himself. Expressing his disappointment, Maezawa stated that he had signed up for the mission in 2018 with the expectation of launching in 2023. However, with the current uncertainties surrounding the Starship's launch timeline, he cannot plan his future accordingly.
Maezawa further expressed remorse for the crew members who had been eagerly waiting for the opportunity. Among those selected for the mission were DJ Steve Aoki, filmmaker Brendan Hall, musician Choi Seung Hyunm, and YouTuber Tim Dodd. The cancellation comes as a disappointment to both the artists and space enthusiasts who were eagerly anticipating the unique artistic collaboration that Maezawa had envisioned for the lunar journey.
The decision to cancel the dearMoon mission comes as SpaceX continues its efforts in developing the Starship. The space company is currently preparing for its fourth flight test, slated for June 5th. However, with the intricacies and challenges involved in the technical journey of the spacecraft development, the project's cancellation was deemed necessary.
Several factors may have contributed to the cancellation, as noted by Ars Technica. The focus on SpaceX's government contracts and the financial situation of Yusaku Maezawa, whose net worth has decreased since 2018, could have played a role. Despite his net worth still exceeding $1 billion, the billionaire's concerns about the financial feasibility of the mission cannot be overlooked.
It is worth noting that Yusaku Maezawa has already experienced space travel when he rode a Russian Soyuz rocket to the International Space Station in 2021. During his previous mission, he spent a total of 12 days on board the ISS, fulfilling his lifelong dream of traveling beyond the Earth's atmosphere.
As the cancellation of the dearMoon mission is announced, it is clear that the future of commercial space travel, particularly involving lunar missions, remains uncertain. The setbacks faced by SpaceX in the development of the Starship highlight the challenges and complexities in realizing such ambitious endeavors.
