In a letter addressed to the administration, SGA President Chase Patterson questioned the suitability of Ambassador Thomas-Greenfield as the commencement speaker, pointing out her voting record. Xavier University President Reynold Verret responded to the controversy on Wednesday, acknowledging the differing opinions within the community. He stated, "There are also many in this community who admire Ambassador Thomas-Greenfield and believe she would meaningfully contribute to the commencement ceremony." Verret emphasized that the priority was to ensure a commencement ceremony that appropriately honors the graduates and their achievements. He further stated that the majority of students wished for an interruption-free occasion.

Consequently, it was jointly decided between Xavier University and Ambassador Thomas-Greenfield's team not to proceed with her as the commencement speaker. Verret expressed his regret for the outcome and expressed hope that the ambassador would have the opportunity to engage with the university's students and faculty in substantive conversations in the future.

At present, there has not been an announcement regarding a replacement speaker for the commencement ceremony. The university will continue to evaluate potential candidates and strive to select an individual who will resonate with the graduating class and contribute to a momentous celebration.
