In response to backlash from the Student Government Association (SGA), Xavier University has made the decision to cancel Ambassador Linda Thomas-Greenfield as the 2024 graduation commencement speaker. The SGA President Chase Patterson expressed disapproval for the selection, citing Ambassador Thomas-Greenfield's vote against a cease-fire in Gaza.

In a letter addressed to the administration, SGA President Chase Patterson questioned the suitability of Ambassador Thomas-Greenfield as the commencement speaker, pointing out her voting record. The decision sparked a debate within the university community, with some students supporting the ambassador and others expressing concern over her stance on the Gaza conflict.

Xavier University President Reynold Verret responded to the controversy on Wednesday, acknowledging the differing opinions within the community. He stated, "There are also many in this community who admire Ambassador Thomas-Greenfield and believe she would meaningfully contribute to the commencement ceremony." Verret emphasized that the priority was to ensure a commencement ceremony that appropriately honors the graduates and their achievements. He further stated that the majority of students wished for an interruption-free occasion.

Consequently, it was jointly decided between Xavier University and Ambassador Thomas-Greenfield's team not to proceed with her as the commencement speaker. Verret expressed his regret for the outcome and expressed hope that the ambassador would have the opportunity to engage with the university's students and faculty in substantive conversations in the future.

At present, there has not been an announcement regarding a replacement speaker for the commencement ceremony. The university will continue to evaluate potential candidates and strive to select an individual who will resonate with the graduating class and contribute to a momentous celebration.

Xavier University's decision to cancel Ambassador Linda Thomas-Greenfield as the commencement speaker highlights the importance of considering various perspectives in university-level decision-making. As the university seeks a new speaker, it aims to ensure a meaningful and harmonious commencement experience for its graduating students in 2024.
