A 23-year-old woman was killed in an exchange of gunfire with law enforcement officers in Chester, Delaware County, following a high-speed chase that temporarily shut down I-95 on Tuesday. The woman, who has not been identified by police, was wanted in connection with a shooting incident that occurred in Wilmington, Delaware on December 2, 2023.

According to authorities, officers from the Wilmington Police Department attempted to apprehend the woman on North Madison Street, but she managed to evade them. In her attempt to escape, she rammed into multiple police vehicles and fled northbound on I-95 towards Pennsylvania. Pursued by Wilmington police and Delaware State Police, the woman ultimately crashed her vehicle and proceeded to fire a gun at the officers.

Delaware State Police officers also discharged their weapons during the exchange of gunfire. Following the shootout, the woman gained access to another vehicle and traveled to Chester, where she crashed again. After the second crash, she entered a house, committing what police have referred to as a "home invasion." Leaving the residence, she then tried to enter a third vehicle in an attempt to escape.

As she made her third escape attempt, authorities report that three Wilmington officers, five Delaware State Police officers, a Trainer Borough Police Department officer, and one Chester Police Department officer discharged their weapons, fatally striking the woman. One Wilmington officer sustained a minor injury and was transported to the hospital, while no other first responders were harmed.

Throughout the incident, all lanes of I-95 between Exit 4 in the vicinity of the Commodore Barry Bridge and Exit 6 were temporarily closed due to police activity but have since reopened. An investigation into the shooting and chase is underway, led by the Delaware County District Attorney's Office.

The Wilmington Police Department officers involved in the shooting have been placed on administrative duty pending the outcome of the investigation. Updates on this developing story will be provided as new information becomes available.
