In an eagerly anticipated announcement, head coach Ryan Day officially declared Will Howard as Ohio State's starting quarterback for the upcoming 2024 season. This news comes after an intense quarterback battle throughout preseason camp, in which Howard emerged as the frontrunner due to his impressive improvements and command of the offense.
Though Howard had shown some inconsistency in terms of downfield accuracy during spring practices, his dedication and progress over the past few weeks have solidified his position. Day praised Howard's ability to take charge of the huddle, demonstrating confidence and making crucial plays, especially on third downs.
With the starting quarterback position settled, Ohio State can now focus on refining their offensive gameplan for the season opener against Akron on August 31. Day also confirmed that Devin Brown, a redshirt sophomore, will serve as the team's backup quarterback.
Howard's experience as a fifth-year senior and transfer from Kansas State played a significant role in winning the starting job. During his time with the Wildcats, he amassed 5,786 passing yards and made 28 starts. In the 2023 season alone, Howard completed 61.3% of his passes for 2,643 yards and 24 touchdowns, earning him second-team All-Big 12 honors.
Additionally, Howard's running ability adds an extra dimension to Ohio State's offense. With an impressive sprint speed and physical stature, standing at 6-4 and 230 pounds, he poses a challenge for opposing defenses. Last season at Kansas State, Howard rushed for 351 yards and recorded nine touchdowns, showcasing his agility and power.
Wide receiver Carnell Tate expressed excitement about Howard's rushing prowess, referring to him as a "big bowling ball" that adds a dynamic element to the team's game. The Buckeyes' offense will benefit from Howard's skills both as a passer and a runner.
Now that Howard has been declared the starter, he will have the opportunity to work closely with the first-team offense during the remaining two weeks of preseason camp. This dedicated time will allow him to further establish his command of the offense and foster chemistry with Ohio State's top receivers.
Unlike the previous season, where the quarterback competition extended into the first two games, Ohio State enters the 2024 season with a clear leader. This advantage allows Howard and the rest of the team to find their rhythm as they kick off the season with three non-conference matchups before embarking on Big Ten play against Michigan State on September 28.
As all eyes turn to Will Howard, Buckeyes fans eagerly anticipate the impact he will make as Ohio State's starting quarterback, leading the team with his skillset and experience acquired throughout his collegiate career.
