In a surprising turn of events, two prominent Democrats have released a memo detailing an audacious strategy to replace President Joe Biden on their party's 2024 ticket. Rosa Brooks, a Georgetown law professor with extensive political experience, and Ted Dintersmith, a venture capitalist and education philanthropist, have presented a plan that would require Biden to step down as the head of the ticket by mid-July.
According to the memo, once Biden steps down, the Democratic Party would establish a new system to decide his replacement, with the support of Vice President Kamala Harris. This would initiate a rapid-fire succession of events, including an unconventional 'blitz primary' in which potential candidates would have just a few days to announce their candidacy. To ensure a positive and uplifting campaign, the six candidates with the most votes from delegates must pledge to run a strictly positive-only campaign in the month leading up to the Democratic National Convention in Chicago on August 19.
The proposed 'blitz primary' would not only be unique for its tight timeline but also for the inclusion of high-profile celebrities as forum moderators. Cultural icons like Michelle Obama, Oprah Winfrey, and Taylor Swift may lead weekly forums with each candidate, adding a touch of glamour to the race.
Ultimately, the nominee would be chosen by delegates using a ranked-choice voting system, and the memo suggests that the chosen candidate should be unveiled on stage with President Biden, former President Barack Obama, and former President Bill Clinton to symbolize unity within the party.
Brooks and Dintersmith believe that their unconventional plan would garner widespread support and donations, while positioning Biden as a selfless leader who prioritizes the greater good over personal ambition. However, they acknowledge that there are challenges to their proposal, as Biden has thus far shown no inclination to step down. Furthermore, the plan does not automatically guarantee Vice President Harris the nomination, leaving room for other candidates to rally behind her.
Biden's recent struggles, including a lackluster performance during a CNN debate on June 27 and several questionable public statements, have prompted growing concerns within the Democratic Party about his ability to lead for another term. At least 10 Democrats, including Representatives Jerry Nadler, Mark Takano, Don Beyer, and Adam Smith, have already called on Biden to drop out of the race.
Despite these calls, Biden remains resolute, continuing his campaign with appearances in Pennsylvania. His recent stops at a predominantly black church and an ice cream shop received mixed reactions, with some attendees finding his remarks difficult to hear.
While the likelihood of the proposed plan becoming a reality is uncertain, Brooks claims to have received near-universal support from recipients of her memo. The memo's authors suggest that if the plan receives President Biden's approval, key party leaders would likely back it.
As the debate over Biden's future intensifies within the Democratic Party, only time will tell whether this controversial plan will gain traction or fade away as an intriguing but improbable proposition.
