In a recent move to consolidate its workforce, retail giant Walmart is reportedly asking employees in Dallas, Atlanta, and Toronto to relocate to larger hubs while also cutting jobs and ending remote work, according to reports from The Wall Street Journal, Bloomberg News, and CNBC.

The company is consolidating its corporate staff to its headquarters in Bentonville, Arkansas, as well as Hoboken, New Jersey, and San Francisco. Chief People Officer Donna Morris explained the decision in a memo sent to employees, emphasizing the belief that being together in person fosters collaboration, innovation, and a stronger company culture.

Walmart had transitioned its headquarters employees back to office work in February 2022 after the majority worked remotely during the initial phase of the pandemic. With the goal of promoting increased collaboration, Morris stated that most remote workers and employees in the Dallas, Atlanta, and Toronto offices would be asked to relocate. The primary destinations for relocations will be Bentonville, with some employees going to offices in San Francisco and Hoboken, according to the memo.

This move comes shortly after Walmart's decision to close all of its health clinics, including some in Dallas-Fort Worth and Houston. The company had been constructing its expansive new corporate headquarters since 2019 on a 350-acre site in Bentonville. Previously, employees were dispersed across 20 different buildings, but they are now being brought together at the new office campus, which is surrounded by biking and hiking trails.

According to The Wall Street Journal, the exact number of layoffs is in the hundreds. Employees will still have the option to work remotely, provided that they spend most of their time in the office, as disclosed by sources familiar with the matter.

Although Walmart has not provided further information at this time, these changes highlight the company's effort to streamline its operations and promote closer collaboration among its employees.
