In a high-stakes primary race for Virginia's 5th District, Rep. Bob Good finds himself up against formidable opponents. Good, a Virginia Republican and the chair of the hard-right House Freedom Caucus, is facing multiple challenges from within his own party.
On Friday, Good addressed a group of supporters outside the historic county courthouse, emphasizing the significance of the race. He warned that the "D.C. establishment swamp" was trying to buy the seat and urged his backers to stand firm against their efforts.
One key player working against Good is former Speaker Kevin McCarthy, who seeks to take down the small group of Republicans who ousted him late last year. McCarthy's initial attempt to unseat Good's colleague, Rep. Nancy Mace of South Carolina, fell short in a recent primary. However, he remains determined to secure a victory against Good.
Adding to Good's difficulties is the endorsement of his opponent, state Sen. John McGuire, by former President Donald Trump. McGuire, a former Navy SEAL and participant in the "Stop the Steal" rally, received Trump's backing late last month. The former president took a swipe at Good, mentioning his history of fluctuating support and opposition towards Trump. Trump's endorsement could potentially sway voters in the deep-red district, which stretches from the Richmond suburbs to the state's southern border.
The primary race on Tuesday marks Good's first traditional primary contest. In 2020, he ousted then-Rep. Denver Riggleman, who also had Trump's endorsement, in a drive-through convention amid the Covid pandemic. Good, aware of the potential influence of Trump's endorsement, acknowledged its significance but maintained his alignment with the former president.
While Trump's endorsement is certainly problematic for Good, he also faces challenges from within his own caucus. Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene of Georgia, who was removed from the Freedom Caucus last summer, has been an outspoken critic. Additionally, at least five other GOP lawmakers have donated to McGuire's campaign, and one member even chartered a bus to campaign for the challenger.
Supporters of Good argue that the primary race is not just about his position as chairman but also about the hard-right conservative wing of the party. Rep. Andy Biggs of Arizona, a fellow member of the Freedom Caucus, addressed Good's supporters, claiming that the race was an attempt to crush their faction. He pointed to McCarthy's involvement, suggesting that he was driven by bitterness and a desire to regain relevance.
The primary race in Virginia's 5th District has attracted significant attention, not only due to its implications for the district's congressional representation but also because of the broader national context. The outcome will be closely watched as a potential gauge of the strength of various factions within the Republican Party.
As Tuesday's primary approaches, Good continues to face an uphill battle against a coalition that includes former President Trump, top Republican lawmakers, and his own colleagues. It remains to be seen how these dynamics will ultimately shape the race and whether Good can secure a victory against his challengers.
