Virginia men's basketball coach Tony Bennett has signed a contract extension that will keep him at the helm of the Cavaliers until the end of the 2029-30 season. The announcement was made by the university on Thursday.

Under the terms of the extension, an additional year will automatically be added to the deal if Bennett remains the coach of the Virginia team on April 30, 2026. This agreement further solidifies Bennett's commitment to the program and ensures stability for the foreseeable future.

In expressing his gratitude, Bennett shared his love for the university, stating that it has always been a special place for him and his family. He also expressed his excitement to continue working alongside athletic director Carla Williams and university president Jim Ryan, as well as his determination to build an exceptional basketball program both on and off the court.

Bennett has been an integral part of the Virginia basketball program since 2009 when he took over as head coach, succeeding Dave Leitao. During his tenure, the Cavaliers have achieved remarkable success, making 10 NCAA tournament appearances and clinching six ACC regular-season championships. He has been recognized as the AP National Coach of the Year twice, in 2007 and 2018, and has secured two conference tournament titles.

Throughout his 16 seasons at Virginia, Bennett has amassed an impressive record of 364 wins and 136 losses, solidifying his position as one of the most successful coaches in college basketball. His strategic leadership and dedication to the values of the university have made him a vital figure within the Virginia community.

Athletic director Carla Williams commended Bennett, stating that he is instrumental in their pursuit of championships amid the changing landscape of college athletics. She praised his embodiment of the core values of the University of Virginia and expressed her honor to work alongside him. Williams expressed her enthusiasm for the future of men's basketball under Bennett's guidance.

The Cavaliers encountered some challenges towards the end of last season, losing five out of their final nine games and eventually bowing out against Colorado State in the NCAA tournament. However, the team has made significant efforts to rebuild its roster through the transfer portal and recruiting trail. Notable additions include ESPN 100 forward Jacob Cofie, as well as impact transfers TJ Power (formerly of Duke), Elijah Saunders (formerly of San Diego State), Dai Dai Ames (formerly of Kansas State), and Jalen Warley (formerly of Florida State).

With a promising roster and Coach Bennett's unwavering commitment, the future looks bright for Virginia men's basketball. Fans can anticipate continued success and the pursuit of championships under his leadership.
