Violent clashes erupted in Jerusalem on Sunday as protests against the drafting of ultra-Orthodox Jews into the Israeli military turned aggressive, resulting in attacks on law enforcement officers and a minister's car, according to local police.
The protesters, believed to be ultra-Orthodox Jews, resorted to throwing stones at police officers and Minister Yitzhak Goldknopf's car as he returned to his residence. Additionally, they set trash cans on fire, blocking the highway and causing further disruption.
Social media footage captured the chaotic scenes, showing protesters surrounding the minister's car, banging on its windows, and children and teenage demonstrators walking near dumpster fires.
The demonstrations have been ongoing since the Israeli Supreme Court's ruling last Tuesday, ordering the government to draft ultra-Orthodox Jews into the military. Previously, the ultra-Orthodox community had been exempt from compulsory military service since Israel's establishment.
The court's ruling also stated that the government would no longer fund religious schools, known as "yeshivas," whose students do not participate in the military draft. However, it is important to note that the ruling only applies to ultra-Orthodox men.
Despite repeated orders to disperse, the protesters ignored the authorities' instructions, leading the police to employ the use of force to restore order. In response, five individuals were arrested, two of whom for attacking police officers, while the other three were detained for throwing stones and other objects.
The police issued a statement condemning the violence, stating, "The police take seriously the attempts of those violent lawbreakers to hurt Israeli police officers with stones, sticks, eggs, and other things. There is no connection between a lawful protest and criminal and violent conduct of this type - which may lead to injury to body and property."
The statement further emphasized that the conduct of those causing disturbances and breaking the law would be firmly addressed. Police presence remains in the area to maintain public order and prevent further disturbances.
As the nation grapples with the implications of integrating ultra-Orthodox Jews into the military, tensions are running high. It remains to be seen how both sides will navigate through the ongoing challenges in addressing this issue.
