Vice President Kamala Harris expressed her readiness to debate former President Donald Trump on Thursday, affirming her commitment to the previously scheduled September 10 debate hosted by ABC News. Speaking to reporters after landing at Joint Base Andrews on Air Force Two, Harris stated, "He agreed to that previously. Now here he is backpedaling, and I'm ready and I think the voters deserve to see the split screen that exists in this race on a debate stage. And so, I'm ready to go."
This statement comes as a response to Trump's commitment to debating Harris earlier this week. However, Trump also pushed for a separate debate hosted by the more conservative Fox News, referring to ABC as "a joke." Harris accused Trump of backpedaling, despite his recent statement that he would debate Harris regardless and would be open to multiple debates.
In May, Trump and President Joe Biden agreed to two debates: a CNN face-off on June 27th and another scheduled for September 10th, to be hosted by ABC. After Biden's performance in the June debate led to criticism of his campaign, Democrats launched a weekslong effort to persuade him to exit the race.
Trump has previously shared his belief that Harris would be an easier opponent to beat than Biden, considering her slightly more mainstream stance. However, Harris remains determined to face off against the former president and is prepared to present her arguments to the American public.
As the September 10th debate approaches, voters eagerly anticipate witnessing the clash between Harris and Trump, as both candidates aim to assert their positions on critical issues.
