Title: Vice-President Kamala Harris pledges over $1.5bn in aid for Ukraine's energy sector and humanitarian situation

In a significant display of support for Ukraine, US Vice-President Kamala Harris has pledged more than $1.5 billion in aid for the country's energy sector and humanitarian situation during its ongoing war with Russia. Harris made the announcement at a peace summit in Lucerne, Switzerland, where she met with Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskiy.

During a bilateral meeting with Zelenskiy, Harris condemned Russian President Vladimir Putin's actions and called the war "an utter failure for Putin." She emphasized the importance of upholding international norms and pledged the United States' support for Ukraine.

The aid package includes $500 million in new funding for energy assistance. Additionally, $324 million in previously announced funds will be redirected towards emergency energy infrastructure repair and other urgent needs in Ukraine, according to Harris' office.

"This support will help Ukraine respond effectively to Russia's recent attacks on its energy infrastructure by facilitating repair and recovery efforts," Harris' office stated. The aid will also improve Ukraine's resilience to energy supply disruptions and lay the groundwork for repairing and expanding the country's energy system.

Harris also announced over $379 million in humanitarian assistance from the US State Department and the US Agency for International Development. This funding will provide essential resources such as food assistance, health services, shelter, and water, sanitation, and hygiene services for millions of Ukrainians affected by the war.

As President Joe Biden is concluding his participation at the G7 summit in Italy and attending a campaign fundraiser in Los Angeles, Vice-President Harris stands in for him at the peace summit. President Biden has recently met President Zelenskiy both at the G7 summit, where they signed a bilateral security agreement, and in France during events commemorating the 80th anniversary of the D-day invasion.

White House national security advisor, Jake Sullivan, will represent the US at the summit on Sunday. Sullivan will assist in establishing working groups focused on the repatriation of Ukrainian children from Russia and enhancing energy security.

Vice-President Harris's pledge of substantial financial aid reflects the United States' commitment to supporting Ukraine's energy sector and alleviating the humanitarian challenges caused by the ongoing conflict with Russia. The assistance aims to bolster Ukraine's capacity to withstand energy disruptions and provide vital support to those affected by the war.
