Recent polls indicate that Vice President Kamala Harris is making significant strides in narrowing former President Donald Trump's lead in the key swing state of Florida. While Florida has typically leaned Republican in recent elections, Trump's victories in the last two elections and Governor Ron DeSantis' strong reelection bid in 2022 had solidified the state as a safe Republican stronghold. However, the latest polls suggest that Harris is gaining ground and raising questions about Florida's Republican status.
According to a survey conducted by USA Today/Suffolk University/WSVN-TV between August 7 and August 11, Trump currently holds a 5-point lead with 47 percent support, while Harris closely trails behind at 42 percent. The survey's margin of error was plus or minus 4.4 percent. Another poll conducted by the Florida Atlantic University Political Communication, Public Opinion Research Lab (PolCom Lab) and Mainstreet Research USA between August 10 and August 11 shows Trump with a narrower 3-point lead, garnering 50 percent support, as compared to Harris' 47 percent.
The narrowing gap between Trump and Harris aligns with the trend seen in other states, suggesting a potentially competitive race in Florida. Kevin Wagner, Ph.D., professor of political science and co-director of the PolCom Lab, noted that the trend is consistent with tightening polls nationwide. If this trend continues, it could significantly impact the outcome of the race in Florida.
Earlier polls conducted by McLaughlin and Associates and Redfield & Wilton Strategies had shown Trump with leads of 8 and 6 points, respectively. However, the recent polls indicate a shift in momentum, with Harris gaining traction and narrowing the gap in Florida. David Paleologos, director of the Suffolk University Political Research Center, emphasized that while Harris still faces an uphill battle, she is closer than expected.
Polls conducted since Harris entered the race on July 21 consistently show Trump leading by a margin of 2 to 8 points, whereas before her entry, Trump had been leading by 4 to 13 points. These recent poll results highlight the increasing competitiveness in Florida's electoral landscape.
Despite Harris' progress, the poll aggregator website, Race to the White House, projects that Trump is still expected to prevail over Harris in the state. According to the website's tracker, Trump is currently polling at an average of 50 percent, while Harris stands at 44.6 percent. Nevertheless, the tracker also shows that Harris has gained an impressive 9.9 points over the past 45 days, suggesting that the race in Florida could become increasingly unpredictable.
In the 2020 election, Trump secured victory in Florida by a margin of 3.3 percentage points, following a narrower victory of 1.2 points in 2016. With the race tightening between Trump and Harris, Florida's status as a Republican stronghold is being called into question, setting the stage for an intriguing battle for the state's crucial electoral votes in the upcoming election.
