Vacaville Police Officer Killed in Line of Duty in Tragic Traffic Incident

In a heartbreaking turn of events, a Vacaville police officer lost his life while carrying out his duty during a traffic stop on Thursday morning. The officer, identified as Matthew Bowen, was tragically struck by a vehicle, leading to his untimely demise. The driver of the vehicle has been taken into custody, and investigations are ongoing.
Officer Bowen had recently joined the Vacaville Police Department on June 13, 2023, after serving as a police officer in Concord. The department expressed deep sorrow over the loss, highlighting Bowen's exemplary dedication and honorable service. Survived by his wife, two sons, parents, and brother, Bowen's passing has left a void in the department, the city, and the community.
The incident took place at the intersection of Leisure Town Road and Orange Drive, prompting the closure of the area as authorities conduct their investigations. As of now, there is no estimated time for the reopening of the road. Furthermore, the westbound freeway onramp near the crash site is also temporarily closed.
According to California Highway Patrol traffic logs, the crash occurred at 10:31 a.m., leaving devastating scenes at the site. A severely damaged motorcycle, belonging to the Vacaville Police Department, could be seen, torn in half. Additionally, a gray sedan with a severely damaged front bumper, a vehicle with rear left wheel damage, and another involved vehicle were present, reflecting the force of the collision.
The California Highway Patrol's Multidisciplinary Accident Investigation Team (MAIT) and the Fairfield Police Department's patrol vehicle have been dispatched to the scene to assist with the ongoing investigation.
Following the crash, Officer Bowen was immediately transported to Kaiser Hospital, where he was sadly pronounced dead. The Vacaville Police Department expressed immense gratitude for the support pouring in from neighboring agencies during this difficult time. They also requested privacy for the family as they navigate this heart-wrenching loss.
At 6:30 p.m., the city's police chief is scheduled to issue a statement regarding the tragic incident. Meanwhile, outside the police station, touching tributes in the form of flowers have been placed in remembrance of Officer Bowen.
State Senator Bill Dodd, representing Napa, expressed his deep sadness over Officer Bowen's death, acknowledging his unwavering commitment to ensuring community safety. Senator Dodd extended heartfelt condolences to Officer Bowen's family and colleagues in law enforcement.
