USA Gymnastics is making significant strides in its ongoing battle to help Jordan Chiles regain her bronze medal from the 2024 Paris Games. Chiles, who was initially awarded the bronze in the women's gymnastics floor final, had her medal stripped following an appeal controversy. However, new evidence has emerged that may prove Chiles' coach, Cecile Landi, submitted the appeal within the designated time frame, potentially overturning the decision.
The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) had ruled that Landi's appeal to raise Chiles' difficulty score was submitted four seconds past the 60-second time limit. This resulted in Chiles' score being adjusted from 13.666 to 13.766, securing her a third-place finish. Yet, USA Gymnastics has recently uncovered video footage from the Netflix docuseries, "Simone Biles: Rising," that could present a crucial breakthrough for Chiles' case.
According to court documents released on Monday, Landi is seen in the footage addressing the judges with the words, "Inquiry for Jordan!" just 49 seconds after Chiles received her score in the floor routine. This revelation suggests that Landi's appeal was made well within the specified time limit. Landi repeated the phrase "inquiry for Jordan" several times before the deadline, strengthening the argument that the appeal was submitted on time.
This short clip might prove to be the most compelling evidence thus far in USA Gymnastics' tireless efforts to restore Chiles' bronze medal. However, it remains uncertain whether the evidence will be accepted and considered by the CAS. Notably, earlier attempts by USA Gymnastics to present new video evidence to the CAS were rejected on the grounds that they were introduced after the initial ruling had been made.
In response, Chiles herself has taken matters into her own hands. On Monday, she filed a formal appeal with the Swiss Federal Tribunal to challenge the CAS's decision. Included in the ongoing appeal is a seven-minute video presentation that supports the contention that Landi submitted the inquiry on time.
Chiles, expressing her dissatisfaction with the CAS ruling, previously described it as "unjust" and "devastating" in a statement shared on her social media platforms. Her actions, along with USA Gymnastics' persistent fight, indicate a determined pursuit of justice and a deep desire to right what they believe to be a wrong.
As the battle continues, the gymnastics community and fans eagerly await further developments in Chiles' quest to reclaim her hard-earned bronze medal. The outcome of her appeal to the Swiss Federal Tribunal and the reception of the newly uncovered video evidence could prove crucial in determining the final verdict.
