In a powerful gesture of support for Taiwan in the face of escalating tensions with China, a bipartisan delegation of US lawmakers visited the island nation. Led by House Foreign Affairs Chairman Michael McCaul, the group met with Taiwanese President Lai Ching-tse and Foreign Minister Jaushieh Joseph Wu to discuss the growing threat posed by China. This visit marks the first time US officials have met with the newly elected Taiwanese officials since their inauguration a little over a week ago.

During the meetings, Congressman McCaul expressed his concern over China's hostility towards Taiwan, drawing a parallel between the current situation and the tension witnessed during World War II. He emphasized the importance of democratic nations standing together against aggression and tyranny, whether it is Vladimir Putin and Russia, the ayatollah of Iran, or Chairman Xi Jinping of China. McCaul described it as an "unholy alliance eroding peace around the world."

Other members of the delegation, including Rep. Young Kim and Foreign Affairs panel's Indo-Pacific subcommittee chair, reiterated the desire to avoid conflict in the Taiwan Strait. They emphasized the objective of providing Taiwan with necessary resources and support to ensure deterrence and protection.

The timing of this visit is important, as it comes shortly after China surrounded the island with warships and military aircraft as a response to President Lai's advocacy for a free and independent Taiwan. The Chinese Defense Ministry positioned the military operation as a "punishment" for Lai's beliefs.

During a press conference, Foreign Minister Wu described China's military drills as a blatant intimidation tactic to punish democracy. McCaul echoed this sentiment, highlighting Chairman Xi's disdain for democracy and the lack of freedom and power experienced by the Chinese people under his rule.

The camaraderie between the US lawmakers and Taiwanese officials was evident throughout the meetings, with both sides expressing the importance of a unified front against China's aggression. The visit was seen as a powerful display of strong bipartisan support for Taiwan from the US.

President Lai, referencing former US President Ronald Reagan's foreign policy of peace through strength, pledged to enhance reform and bolster national defense. He stressed Taiwan's determination to defend its homeland.

The US delegation's visit is seen as a significant step in reaffirming the close ties between the United States and Taiwan and sending a clear message to China. As tensions continue to rise in the Indo-Pacific region, it is imperative for democratic nations to remain vigilant and united in the face of aggression.

The US lawmakers' visit to Taiwan and their discussions with Taiwanese officials represent a crucial moment in addressing China's increasing aggression. The support and solidarity demonstrated by the delegation underline the shared commitment to promoting stability and peace in the region.
