US Congress Approves $95 Billion Military Aid Package, Raises Concerns of Escalating Global Tensions

The aid is intended for ongoing conflicts in Ukraine and Gaza, as well as preparations against China, leading many to speculate about the potential for World War III.
US President Joe Biden, echoing the words of George Orwell, declared the approval a "good day for world peace," asserting that it would make the world safer. However, critics argue that this bipartisan authorization could actually bring the doomsday clock closer to midnight, further intensifying global threats.
Notably, Biden emphasized that the aid package is a demonstration of America's continued leadership in the world. In a departure from previous justifications such as the fight against communism or terrorism, the current national security doctrine centers around "great power competition." This strategic approach aims to maintain American dominance in the face of increasing challenges to US hegemony.
Despite Biden's assertion of global support for US leadership, the recent vote in the UN General Assembly on an immediate ceasefire in Gaza revealed a starkly different reality. With an overwhelming majority of 153 in favor, only a few countries, including the US and Israel, opposed the resolution, while a mere 23 countries abstained. This demonstrates that the majority of the world's population opposes the US on many key issues.
Biden's claim that Ukraine has regained over half of the territory taken by Russia is disputed by the Annual Threat Assessment of the US Intelligence Community. The report suggests that the current deadlock in Ukraine plays to Russia's military advantage and is shifting momentum in Moscow's favor. Furthermore, it highlights that a significant number of Ukrainian men of fighting age, approximately 650,000, have fled the country.
The US administration's response to the diminishing prospects of a decisive victory in Ukraine has been worrying. Rather than seeking a negotiated settlement, Washington appears to be pushing for more war. Though presented as a strategy to prevent being drawn into a conflict with Russia, the US continues to provide armaments that fuel the ongoing conflict.
Biden's endorsement of NATO's expansion, despite earlier assurances not to advance eastward, is a significant point of contention. This expansion directly undercuts Russia's stated redline and has been cited as a reason for Russia's incursion into Ukraine. Veterans for Peace activist and author Dee Knight characterizes the aid package as an "open-ended commitment to the NATO war against Russia."
In a perplexing twist, Biden condemned a brutal campaign that has resulted in tens of thousands of deaths and the bombing of hospitals. However, this statement, seemingly in reference to the ongoing conflict in Gaza, is instead directed elsewhere. Biden, despite his ability to influence Israel's actions, does not address the humanitarian crisis in the region nor call for a halt to the violence.
The aid package has both lethal weapons and humanitarian aid for the suffering in Gaza, suggesting a conflicting approach. The lack of recognition that an immediate and permanent ceasefire is the first step to alleviate the suffering is concerning. While war may prove profitable for US military contractors, it raises questions about the prioritization of human lives.
Critics have also highlighted the question of legality surrounding the arms shipments. The US has supplied both Ukraine and Israel with prohibited weaponry without legal pre-authorization. Reports indicate that the majority of the funds allocated for Ukraine are for weapons it already possesses.
The approval of the $95 billion military aid package raises concerns about the Biden administration's vision for an enduring peace, which some argue looks more like chaos and endless war. As history unfolds, the ramifications of this decision will undoubtedly be remembered.
