In a recent interview, United Auto Workers (UAW) President, Shawn Fain, expressed his apprehensions about the labor positions held by potential running mates for Vice President Kamala Harris, denoting them as "troubling." While Fain pledged his union's support for the Democratic ticket regardless of the vice presidential choice, he shed light on certain perspectives that have caused unease among labor advocates.
Fain emphasized two individuals specifically - Arizona U.S. Senator Mark Kelly and Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro - outlining their positions on key labor matters that have raised concerns. Fain noted Kelly's lack of early support for the Protecting the Right to Organize Act (PRO Act), which aims to safeguard collective bargaining in workplaces. Additionally, Fain criticized Shapiro's endorsement of school vouchers, a system that allocates public funds towards private education.
Despite these concerns, Fain asserted the primary goal of defeating Republican nominee Donald Trump, stating that another Trump presidency would be detrimental to the nation and working-class individuals. Fain's remarks came after the UAW endorsed Kamala Harris for president just one day prior.
Following Democratic President Joe Biden's endorsement of Harris as the party's nominee, speculation has been rife regarding her choice for a running mate. Fain's interview coincided with Harris' upcoming appearance alongside her pick at a rally in Philadelphia on Tuesday. Furthermore, plans are underway for Harris and the UAW to hold a joint campaign rally in Metro Detroit on Wednesday, details of which are yet to be released.
When asked about his preferences, Fain voiced support for Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear or Minnesota Governor Tim Walz to join Harris on the ticket. He described them as formidable candidates with strong stances on labor and working-class issues, particularly highlighting Beshear as his favorite.
Regarding Mark Kelly, Fain expressed concern over his delayed endorsement of the PRO Act. However, three days after Biden withdrew from the race, Kelly endorsed the legislation, affirming his dedication to it. Kelly also expressed a willingness to make improvements to the bill but emphasized his support for it wholeheartedly.
Turning to Governor Shapiro, Fain criticized his endorsement of taxpayer-funded private school vouchers, which has drawn opposition from public sector labor unions advocating for strong public education. Fain accused the Republican Party of attacking public education and viewed Shapiro's support of vouchers as a significant issue.
Fain defended the UAW's endorsement of Kamala Harris based on her strong record, including her support for the auto manufacturing industry and battery plants during the Biden-Harris administration. Fain also commended Harris for her visit to striking General Motors Co. workers on the picket line in 2019, contrasting it with then-President Trump's absence.
Throughout the 2024 campaign, Fain and Trump have engaged in numerous clashes. During the Republican National Convention, Trump even called for Fain's removal as the UAW's leader, criticizing the union's handling of certain situations and urging auto workers, both union and non-union, to vote for him.
As the campaign progresses, the evaluation of potential vice presidential candidates continues, with the UAW President highlighting key labor concerns and underlining the critical importance of defeating Donald Trump in the upcoming elections.
