In a recent decision, the University of North Carolina (UNC) Board of Governors has voted to repeal its policy related to diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) programs. The move has sparked concerns about the future of diversity within higher education institutions.

The DEI policy, which had been in place since 2019, required universities under the UNC system to report data on their efforts to promote diversity and inclusion. However, critics argued that these programs went against the concept of "institutional neutrality."

During the vote, two board members opposed the repeal, among them Sonja Nichols, who expressed disappointment that voices were not fully heard during the decision-making process. Nichols emphasized that DEI is essential for amplifying all voices and providing equal opportunities for everyone, regardless of race or gender.

The repealed policy outlined the roles of various DEI positions, such as the system office diversity and inclusion liaison and diversity officers across the university system. By repealing the policy, these positions could be eliminated, along with other related efforts.

The issue of DEI has become increasingly partisan, with Republicans arguing that it discriminates against non-minorities, while Democrats believe it helps level the playing field for all. Democrat lawmakers expressed concerns about the consequences of repealing DEI programs, particularly the potential negative impact on North Carolina's economic development.

Representative Maria Cervania, a Democrat from Wake County, warned that the repeal could have detrimental effects on higher education as it serves as a pipeline to various industries. She emphasized that the future economic development of the state could be put at risk, affecting both large corporations and small businesses.

Supporters of the repeal, including UNC Board of Governors Chair Randy Ramsey, argue that it will promote intellectual freedom. However, critics argue that removing DEI programs could hinder diversity efforts in higher education institutions and impede progress toward creating inclusive environments.

In response to the repeal, UNC System President Peter Hans issued a statement before the vote, stressing that guidance on how to move forward will be sent out to campuses in the coming weeks. The implementation of any changes is expected to begin in the 2024-2025 academic year.

The repealing of the DEI policy by the UNC Board of Governors opens up a wider debate regarding the importance of diversity and inclusion in higher education. The decision has sparked concerns about the potential impact on future generations, economic development, and the overall progress toward creating a more inclusive society.
