In a tragic turn of events, Ugandan Olympic athlete Rebecca Cheptegei has passed away at the age of 33, following a horrifying incident of domestic violence. Cheptegei was being treated at a Kenyan hospital, where she succumbed to her injuries after 80% of her body was burned in an attack by her partner. The Minister of Sports in Kenya has called for stronger measures to combat gender-based violence in the country.

The spokesperson of Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital in Eldoret city, Owen Menach, confirmed Cheptegei's untimely demise on Thursday. Menach revealed that the long-distance runner's organs had failed, and she had been under sedation since her admission to the hospital.

Just a month before the attack, Cheptegei had participated in the women's marathon competition at the Paris Olympics. She finished in 44th place, showcasing her dedication and passion for the sport.

Heartbroken and seeking justice, Cheptegei's father, Joseph Cheptegei, expressed his grief to journalists gathered at the hospital. He described his daughter as a very supportive person and called for authorities to take action against the criminal responsible for her murder. Expressing his concerns, he emphasized that the perpetrator was still at large and might attempt to flee.

According to Trans Nzoia County Police Commander Jeremiah ole Kosiom, the attack took place after Cheptegei and her partner, Dickson Ndiema, had an altercation over a piece of land near the athlete's house. Ndiema allegedly bought gasoline, poured it on Cheptegei, and set her ablaze. Ndiema himself suffered burns in the incident and is currently receiving treatment in the same hospital. His condition, although stable, remains critical.

Cheptegei's parents disclosed that their daughter had purchased land in Trans Nzoia to stay closer to the numerous athletic training centers in Kenya. The local chief's report indicated that there were prior instances of arguments between Cheptegei and Ndiema revolving around the disputed land.

The Uganda Athletics Federation mourned the loss of their athlete, Rebecca Cheptegei, in a heartfelt post on the social platform X. They condemned domestic violence and called for justice to be served. Uganda Olympic Committee President Donald Rukare labeled the attack as a senseless act, leading to the demise of a remarkable athlete.

The incident has drawn attention from international figures as well. Kenya's Sports Minister, Kipchumba Murkomen, vowed that the government would ensure justice for the victim, while International Olympic Committee President Thomas Bach praised Cheptegei's participation in the Paris 2024 women's marathon as a source of inspiration, pride, and joy.

Unfortunately, this tragedy highlights the prevalence of gender-based violence not only in elite sporting circles but also in society as a whole. Kenya's high rates of violence against women have sparked nationwide protests this year. The Kenya Demographic and Health Survey 2022 reveals alarming statistics, indicating that 41% of dating or married Kenyan women have experienced physical or sexual violence at the hands of their current or past partners.

Rebecca Cheptegei's death serves as a painful reminder of the urgent need to address and eradicate gender-based violence. It is a call to action for society, governments, and authorities to unite against such heinous acts and prioritize the safety and well-being of individuals. May her soul rest in peace.
