In a major development, the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) police have apprehended a man believed to be responsible for the assault on pro-Palestinian demonstrators at the university last month. The attack, which took place on campus, caused uproar and criticism of the university's response.

The suspect, identified as 18-year-old Edan On, was taken into custody on Thursday on a felony charge, marking the first arrest connected to the violent attack. On is currently being held in a Los Angeles jail, with bail set at $30,000, as per jail records.

CNN played a crucial role in identifying On through videos that allegedly show him wearing a white mask and hoodie, throwing objects into the encampment, and assaulting pro-Palestinian demonstrators with a wooden pole. Notably, On's mother had initially boasted about his involvement in the attack on Facebook but later denied his presence.

The UCLA police department utilized various sources, including media-shared videos, security camera footage, and interviews with victims and witnesses, to carry out their investigation. While they have not officially named On, the description provided aligns with jail records, and the department has pledged to thoroughly investigate all acts of violence that occurred during the protests.

Since the incident, UCLA has been grappling with the aftermath and public outrage. Following the attack, police dismantled the pro-Palestinian encampment and arrested hundreds of individuals. However, the protesters established a new encampment on Thursday, which was promptly cleared by the police.

The tension surrounding the protests escalated further as UCLA Chancellor Gene Block and other campus leaders testified before Congress on the matter. Though House Republicans clashed with the president of Northwestern University over his handling of a protest community, Chancellor Block was largely spared from criticism. However, Representative Ilhan Omar voiced her disapproval, asserting that Block could have prevented the violent attack on the protesters.

In addition to these challenges, the university now faces an upcoming strike by university workers in response to the crackdown on Gaza protests. The academic workers' union has initiated a rolling strike across various University of California campuses, starting at UC Santa Cruz and expanding to UCLA and UC Davis next week.

As UCLA moves forward, the community hopes for justice to prevail against those responsible for the violent attack while seeking resolutions to address the concerns that have arisen from the pro-Palestinian protests.
