In response to the recent installation of tents on the Quad, UC Davis is affirming its commitment to providing a safe and inclusive campus environment that respects the rights of free expression. The group responsible for setting up the tents, known as UC Davis Popular University for the Liberation of Palestine (UCD PULP), began their peaceful protest on Monday, May 6 at 9:15 a.m.
The university administration is actively engaging with the students to ensure minimal disruption to campus operations, including access to classrooms, work areas, study spaces, and residence halls. Discussions are underway regarding students' rights and responsibilities as per the law and university policies, including the overnight camping policy.
As a public university, UC Davis recognizes and upholds the First Amendment rights of its students, and therefore, will not discipline them for protected speech. Peaceful protests are allowed on campus, and the university is fully committed to maintaining a safe environment for all members of the community.
To assist UCD PULP members, UC Davis's Student Affairs team is working closely with them to provide guidance and information. Additionally, the university is reviewing the demands put forth by the protesters and is actively working towards a response.
University resources are available for any member of the campus community who believes they have experienced harassment or discrimination. The Harassment & Discrimination Assistance and Prevention Program (HDAPP) offers assistance in filing complaints and can explore supportive measures to alleviate any negative impacts on the work or learning environment.
UC Davis provides multiple support services for students who may be struggling with challenges or crisis-related issues. The Office of Student Support and Judicial Affairs has case managers available to assist those in need, while Aggie Mental Health offers counseling support to help students navigate any emotional difficulties they may be facing.
Through its commitment to maintaining a peaceful campus environment and respecting the rights of free expression, UC Davis is working collaboratively with the protesters to ensure their voices are heard while minimizing any disruptions to the university's core educational and research missions.
