The United Auto Workers (UAW) union has voiced its support for a Palestinian American to speak on the final night of the Democratic National Convention, emphasizing the party's need to address ongoing protests over the administration's handling of the Israel-Hamas war in Gaza. In a recent message shared on social media platform X, the UAW highlighted the importance of acknowledging Palestinian Americans within the Democratic Party, stating that their voices should not be ignored.
The UAW emphasized that if the party truly seeks peace, real democracy, and victory in the upcoming election, it must allow a Palestinian American speaker to be heard from the DNC stage on the final night. The call by the UAW comes after hundreds of thousands of people expressed their opposition to President Biden's approach to the Israel-Hamas conflict and his perceived alignment with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu by voting "uncommitted" during the presidential primaries.
Vice President Harris, now leading the ticket after President Biden withdrew from the race, plans to address the conflict during her remarks on Thursday evening. However, her speech will primarily focus on policy issues such as the economy and abortion. The UAW, who endorsed Harris in the November election, had their President, Shawn Fain, speak during the opening night of the convention in Chicago, but he did not touch upon the conflict in his remarks.
The UAW has been advocating for an "immediate, permanent cease-fire in Israel and Palestine" since December, following the offensive by Israel triggered by Hamas' attack on October 7th. The ongoing conflict has resulted in widespread devastation in Gaza, with an estimated 40,000 Palestinians losing their lives, according to the local Health Ministry.
In recent days, pro-Palestinian protesters have gathered at the convention to voice their opposition to the administration's policies on Israel and Gaza. They have accused Biden and Harris of supporting what they describe as genocide; a claim that pro-Israel Democrats and most Republicans vigorously dispute, arguing that it downplays Hamas's role in the conflict.
As of now, the Democratic National Convention has not responded to requests for comments. The list of speakers for the final night has yet to be released, leaving room for potential inclusion of a Palestinian American speaker to address the crowd and to provide a platform for diverse perspectives on the Israel-Hamas conflict.
