In a recent interview on "Face the Nation," United Auto Workers (UAW) President Shawn Fain revealed that his union's top two choices for Vice President Kamala Harris' running mate are Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear and Minnesota Governor Tim Walz. Fain emphasized that the ultimate decision lies with Harris herself, but expressed his belief that their selection would benefit labor and working-class people.

With Harris expected to announce her running mate by Tuesday, the list of contenders includes at least six individuals. Alongside Beshear and Walz, other contenders in the mix are Senator Mark Kelly of Arizona, Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker, and Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro. As Harris conducts interviews with the candidates, the decision draws closer.

Fain, as the leader of the 400,000-member UAW, voiced his support for Beshear, praising the governor for standing with workers on picket lines and consistently supporting labor throughout their protests. Fain pointed out that Beshear's successful track record in winning as a Democrat in a traditionally red state makes him an unbeatable choice alongside Harris.

Regarding Walz, Fain commended him as an "awesome guy for labor," highlighting his positive reputation within the working-class community. However, when it comes to Shapiro and Kelly, Fain expressed concerns about their records in relation to labor leaders. He cited Shapiro's support for private school vouchers as one of the issues that troubled the UAW, while Kelly's recent backing of legislation providing more union protections fell short of alleviating concerns.

Nevertheless, Fain reassured that even if Harris were to select a candidate viewed as less favorable for labor, Harris herself remains committed to the cause. He emphasized that Harris stands for the people, making her the preferred choice for working-class voters in the upcoming election.

The UAW officially endorsed Kamala Harris last week after previously endorsing President Biden before he withdrew from the race. Fain highlighted Harris' actions, such as appearing on picket lines before it became a popular trend, as reasons behind the endorsement. Comparing the candidates' records, Fain drew a clear contrast between Harris and former President Donald Trump, stating that she consistently fought for the working class while Trump left them behind.

Harris is scheduled to meet with UAW members and leaders in Detroit, during her campaign swing across seven battleground states, along with her soon-to-be-announced running mate. As the anticipation builds, all eyes are on Harris as she prepares to make one of the most crucial decisions in her campaign.
