In a concerning incident on Monday, two U.S. service members from the USS Wasp were assaulted in Izmir, Turkey. Thankfully, they have since been declared safe, according to statements from the U.S. Embassy in Turkey and the local governor's office.

The U.S. Embassy in Turkey confirmed reports of the assault, expressing gratitude towards Turkish authorities for their swift response and ongoing investigation. The victims, who were in civilian clothing, were apparently attacked by a group of 15 individuals, consisting of 2 women and 13 men from the Turkish Youth Union (TGB), as stated by the Izmir Governorship.

Amidst the assault, five plain-clothed U.S. soldiers witnessed the incident from a distance and intervened to help their fellow service members. The local police forces promptly responded to the situation, ensuring the safety of the assaulted individuals.

Following the incident, the Izmir Governorship confirmed the detention of the 15 suspects involved in the assault. In response, a judicial investigation has been initiated to determine the circumstances surrounding the attack and hold those responsible accountable.

The USS Wasp, which arrived in Izmir on Sunday for a regularly scheduled port visit, is a United States Department of Defense vessel. The purpose of the visit was to strengthen diplomatic relations and engage in cooperative activities between the two countries.

These assaults serve as a reminder of the challenges faced by military personnel stationed abroad and the importance of swift and decisive action to protect their well-being. The U.S. Embassy in Turkey and local authorities are committed to ensuring the safety and security of all personnel deployed in the region.

As the investigation unfolds, hopes remain high that justice will be served and deterrent measures will be put in place to prevent similar incidents in the future. The U.S. service members involved can now take solace in their rescue and the ongoing support provided by both the U.S. Embassy in Turkey and the local Turkish authorities.
