In response to the Euro Cup soccer tournament and the upcoming Olympics, U.S. military bases across Europe have been placed on heightened alert, according to Pentagon officials. While the move is not a direct response to any specific threat, it is a precautionary measure taken to ensure the safety and security of personnel and installations in the region.
The decision to increase the threat level was confirmed by Army spokeswoman Sabrina Singh, who stated that the move was prompted by a combination of factors that could potentially impact the safety of service members stationed in Europe. Singh did not divulge specific details regarding the intelligence, but emphasized that it was not a single threat but rather a convergence of various elements.
Stars and Stripes was the first to report that U.S. European Command had ordered bases on the continent to activate force protection condition "Charlie." This second-highest state out of five is enacted when there is credible intelligence suggesting a likelihood of terrorist activity or targeting against personnel or facilities.
The implementation of "Charlie" entails increased security measures at the bases, which may include gate closures, additional security forces, and curtailment plans for nonessential personnel, as outlined in a 2022 Army article. However, both Singh and defense officials reiterated that the heightened alert status is primarily a precautionary measure, given the notable events taking place in Europe this summer.
The decision is rooted in an overabundance of caution, with concerns stemming from a combination of ongoing and upcoming large public forums such as the Euro Cup and the Olympics. Officials also cited an increasing threat of attacks by potential bad actors against various non-military targets in Europe as a factor contributing to the decision.
While the focus is currently on Europe, Pentagon spokeswoman Singh did not disclose any similar moves in the Middle East, Africa, or the Indo-Pacific regions. The U.S. European Command, responsible for the safety of personnel stationed in Europe, continuously monitors the security environment to ensure their well-being.
Singh advised all personnel in the European theater to remain vigilant and alert at all times, urging them to report any suspicious activity, monitor travel advisories issued by the Department of State, and implement personal risk mitigation measures. These proactive measures are aimed at safeguarding the individuals and their families.
In March, the French government had already heightened its security level to the highest possible following a terror attack in Russia. Moreover, in May, the U.S. State Department advised U.S. citizens abroad, highlighting the increased potential for violence inspired by foreign terrorist organizations targeting LGBTQ+ persons and events.
As the Euro Cup and the Olympics approach, it remains crucial for military personnel and the general public to remain vigilant and stay informed about the evolving security situation. The military bases' increased alert status demonstrates the commitment to ensuring the safety and security of all individuals involved in these major international events.
