In a recent development, U.S. intelligence agencies have discovered an Iranian plot against former President Donald Trump, according to officials cited by CBS News. Though there are currently no known ties between the failed assassination attempt on Saturday by 20-year-old shooter Thomas Matthew Crooks and any foreign or domestic accomplice, intelligence officials have obtained human source intelligence that indicates the existence of the Iranian plot.

Upon learning about the heightened threat, the National Security Council (NSC) immediately alerted the Secret Service, leading to an increase in resources and assets allocated for Trump's protection as early as June. The additional resources include personnel from Counter Assault Teams, counter sniper teams, as well as the deployment of drones and robotic dogs.

The intelligence gathered goes beyond mere chatter and involves reliable human sources, although it remains unclear how advanced the Iranian plot was when it was detected. The Iranians have harbored animosity towards Trump, particularly due to his role in directing the 2020 airstrike that killed top Iranian commander Gen. Qasem Soleimani. The NSC spokesperson, Adrienne Watson, emphasized that they have been tracking Iranian threats against former Trump administration officials for years, dating back to the previous administration.

While the Secret Service refrained from commenting on specific threats, they affirmed their commitment to taking all threats seriously and responding accordingly. Secret Service spokesman Anthony Guglielmi stated that they constantly receive new potential threat information and adjust their resources accordingly.

Iranian officials have adamantly denied the allegations, dismissing them as "malicious." Foreign ministry spokesman Nasser Kanani stated that Tehran strongly rejects any involvement in the recent armed attack against Trump. Iran's mission to the United Nations echoed these sentiments, describing the accusations of previous plotting against Trump as "unsubstantiated and malicious."

This revelation comes during the ongoing Republican National Convention in Milwaukee. On Monday night, Trump made his first public appearance since the shooting incident, wearing a bandage over his right ear, as he formally nominated Ohio Sen. JD Vance as his running mate.

The Trump campaign spokesperson declined to comment on President Trump's security detail. However, the Secret Service, along with the entire Department of Homeland Security, is now under close scrutiny following Saturday's failed assassination attempt. The shooter injured Trump, claimed the life of a spectator, and critically injured two others before being neutralized by a Secret Service sniper.
