In response to a recent rocket attack in Lebanon, the U.S. Embassy has issued a warning to American citizens, advising them to leave the country as Israel prepares for retaliatory action. The rocket attack, which took place over the weekend, claimed the lives of 12 individuals at a children's soccer field and has heightened concerns of an escalating conflict in the region.

The U.S. Embassy in Lebanon posted a video in which Rena Bitter, U.S. assistant secretary of state for the bureau of consular affairs, urged Americans to develop a crisis plan of action and depart before further crisis ensues. Bitter emphasized that regular commercial transportation remains the best option while the local infrastructure is intact and operating normally.

However, with the anticipation of a major war unfolding, Air France has suspended flights to and from Beirut. This move has been followed by other major airlines, including Lufthansa, Swiss International Air Lines, and Eurowings, who have also temporarily suspended their flights to Lebanon.

Should commercial flights become unavailable, Bitter advised individuals already in Lebanon to be prepared for extended periods of sheltering in place. She assured that the U.S. Department of State is fully focused on the security and safety of U.S. citizens abroad, with Lebanon being a top priority.

Bitter encouraged Americans in Lebanon to enroll in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) to receive travel alerts and stay updated on the situation. She also urged American citizens to reconsider plans for relatives intending to visit Lebanon, given the potential difficulties that could arise from increased conflict in the region.

The separate message released by the U.S. Embassy in Lebanon on Sunday advised U.S. citizens traveling to or from Lebanon to closely monitor their flight status, as itineraries may change with little or no warning. The situation remains tense, and alternate plans should be considered.

Following the rocket attack, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) reportedly conducted a drone strike in southern Lebanon, resulting in the deaths of two Hezbollah terrorists. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, during a three-hour cabinet meeting on Sunday, authorized the determination of the "manner and timing" of a military response to the Hezbollah attack.

The IDF released video footage of a drone flying from Lebanese territory being shot down over Israel's waters, further highlighting the escalating tensions between the two countries. Israel's Ministry of Defense confirmed that Defense Minister Yoav Gallant spoke with U.S. Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin to discuss the evidence linking Hezbollah's responsibility for the rocket attack.

As the situation continues to unfold, it is crucial for U.S. citizens in Lebanon to stay informed and take necessary precautions to ensure their safety.
