In a concerning incident early Saturday morning, security guards at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland engaged in gunfire exchange with an individual who opened fire twice on the entrance of the base. According to Stefanie Antosh, a spokesperson for the base, the incident occurred when shots were fired from a passing vehicle towards the gate. She reassured the public that there is no immediate threat to the installation and fortunately, there were no injuries or fatalities.

The base spokesperson stated that the shooting is currently under investigation by the San Antonio police. Sgt. Washington Moscoso revealed in a press release that the first shooting occurred at around 2:15 a.m. Security personnel reported hearing the shots fired and witnessing the rounds pass by them. As a precautionary measure, additional armed guards were deployed after the incident.

Later, around 4:30 a.m., a vehicle stopped near the same entrance, and shots were fired once again at the Air Force security personnel. However, due to the presence of the additional security personnel, multiple Air Force officers were able to return fire towards the suspect vehicle. The unidentified vehicle quickly fled the scene, leaving no injuries behind.

Authorities are currently working to determine the precise number of rounds fired, the motive behind the attacks, and whether there was more than one shooter involved. Antosh emphasized that these crucial details are yet to be ascertained.

In response to the incident, the entrance to the base remained closed for several hours and reopened around 9:30 a.m. Nonetheless, it is important to note that the base was not placed on lockdown during this period.

Joint Base San Antonio comprises not only Lackland, but also Randolph Air Force Base, the Army's Fort Sam Houston, and the Camp Bullis training camp. With a substantial presence, Lackland alone accommodates over 24,000 active duty members and 10,000 Department of Defense civilians. The base is home to various wings, intelligence agencies, and associated units dedicated to national security.

The investigation into the shooting continues, and the authorities are urging anyone with information to come forward. The safety of all military personnel and civilians within the base remains a top priority as the incident is thoroughly investigated.
