Trump Wrongly Claims He Sent National Guard to Minneapolis, Contradicting Public Evidence

Former President Donald Trump has once again revived his false claim that he personally sent the National Guard to Minneapolis during the civil unrest following the murder of George Floyd in 2020. However, public evidence contradicts Trump's statements, reaffirming that it was actually Governor Tim Walz who took decisive action by deploying the National Guard to maintain peace and order.
During a recent campaign speech in Minnesota, Trump asserted that he had to intervene because Walz failed to act when "violent mobs of anarchists and looters and Marxists" threatened to burn down Minneapolis. He deemed it necessary to send in the National Guard to save the city. Trump also criticized Vice President Kamala Harris for her response to the unrest.
In fact-checking Trump's claims, it has been confirmed that he did not send the National Guard to Minneapolis, nor did Walz refuse to do so. It was Governor Walz who made the decision to deploy the National Guard, doing so more than seven hours before Trump publicly threatened to deploy the troops himself.
The Minnesota National Guard falls under the command of the governor, not the president. While the president has the authority to federalize state Guard troops under certain circumstances, Trump never exercised this power during the 2020 unrest in Minnesota.
Contrary to Trump's narrative, evidence shows that on May 28, 2020, Walz signed an executive order activating the Minnesota National Guard in response to the escalating protests. The Guard publicly announced their readiness and preparations to respond to the governor's request. Later that same night, after a Minneapolis police precinct was set ablaze, the Guard announced the activation of over 500 soldiers in St. Paul, Minneapolis, and surrounding communities.
Trump's false claims began in June 2020, well after Walz had already taken action. Regardless of any public pressure Trump may have exerted, it is indisputable that Governor Walz unilaterally activated the National Guard. It is worth noting that Walz faced criticism from both Republicans and some Democrats for how he managed the unrest.
In conclusion, Trump's repeated claim that he sent the National Guard to Minneapolis and that Governor Walz was unresponsive is contradicted by public evidence. Governor Walz was the one who took prompt action by deploying the National Guard, while Trump's role was limited to making later claims that were not substantiated by the timeline of events.
