In a political twist, former President Donald Trump's reluctance to participate in a debate with Vice President Kamala Harris has caused a stir in the campaign trail. Trump's remarks questioning the need for a debate have prompted sharp responses from Harris and her supporters.
During an interview with Fox Business Network host Maria Bartiromo, Trump expressed his desire to debate his likely Democratic opponent, but raised doubts by stating, "I mean right now I say, why should I do a debate? I'm leading in the polls. And, everybody knows her, everybody knows me."
Cedric Richmond, the co-Chair of Harris for President campaign, responded sharply to Trump's comments, urging him to "man up." Richmond accused Trump of being unafraid when spreading falsehoods or engaging in divisive rhetoric at rallies and interviews, but too scared to face the Vice President of the United States on a debate stage. Echoing Richmond's sentiment, Vice President Harris challenged Trump to "say it to my face" during a rally in Atlanta.
The pressure on Trump to engage in a debate intensified further as the Democratic National Committee announced a digital homepage takeover starting Saturday. The takeover will express criticism towards Trump for being "afraid to debate" and will first launch in Atlanta, followed by newspapers across battleground states.
Trump's stance on debating Harris has become progressively equivocal in recent days. Initially assuring reporters that he would "absolutely" participate in a debate with the Vice President, his campaign later declined to commit until Harris is officially nominated. Finally, in a Fox News interview, Trump conceded that he would "probably" debate Harris but hinted at potential changes to the host or format.
The Trump and Biden campaigns had previously agreed to a debate scheduled for September 10, hosted by ABC News. However, Trump's hesitation has sparked speculation that he may try to renegotiate the terms of the debate due to the change in the Democratic ticket's lineup.
As the conversation surrounding the upcoming debate continues, all eyes will be on Trump to see if he will ultimately face off against Vice President Harris on September 10 as scheduled. The uncertainty surrounding the debate adds another layer of intrigue to the already heated race for the White House.
