In a surprising turn of events, former president Donald Trump has taken to social media platform Truth Social to share AI-generated images that falsely claim Taylor Swift fans, known as Swifties, are supporting his campaign. Trump's latest posts include screenshots supposedly showing young women wearing "Swifties for Trump" T-shirts in various styles, accompanied by captions suggesting a widespread movement of Swifties endorsing him.
However, upon closer investigation, these posts appear to contain a mix of both real and manipulated images that exaggerate the presence of a coordinated Swifties for Trump movement. WIRED, utilizing a tool created by nonprofit True Media to detect deepfakes related to elections, found substantial evidence of manipulation in many of the images shared by Trump.
One of the screenshots shared by Trump originated from an anonymous pro-Trump account with a substantial following of over 300,000 users that frequently posts AI-generated images. Shortly after the Swifties for Trump post gained attention, this account labeled it as "satire" in a subsequent post.
While there is currently no active Swifties for Trump campaign initiative, there does exist a Swifties for Harris group supporting Vice President Kamala Harris. Irene Kim, co-founder of Swifties4Harris, clarified that their group does not represent all Swifties but emphasized that they do not need AI to demonstrate their support for Harris.
Interestingly, there is at least one publicly known Swiftie for Trump. Among the images shared by Trump was a genuine photograph of Jenna Piwowarczyk, who attended a Trump rally in Wisconsin wearing a homemade "Swifties for Trump" T-shirt in June. Piwowarczyk has now started selling her homemade T-shirts on Etsy.
Trump's recent social media activity has increasingly featured AI-generated images. Just last week, he falsely accused the Harris campaign of using AI to inflate crowd sizes at her rallies. Additionally, Trump posted an AI-generated image featuring Harris speaking at the Democratic National Convention in Chicago, with a Soviet Union flag prominently displayed over the crowd.
As disinformation experts continue to highlight the potential dangers posed by generative AI tools to election integrity, numerous instances of AI-generated content influencing elections have been detected worldwide this year, as reported by WIRED.
It is important to note that Taylor Swift has not publicly endorsed any candidate for president. However, during the 2020 election, she did endorse now-President Joe Biden. Swift has been an outspoken critic of Trump, particularly in response to his controversial "when the looting starts, the shooting starts" remark in 2020 during the Black Lives Matter protests in support of George Floyd. Swift accused Trump of feigning moral superiority while perpetuating white supremacy and racism throughout his presidency.
As the use of AI-generated content continues to evolve, the spread of manipulated images and disinformation poses significant challenges for maintaining the integrity of elections and public discourse.
