**Trump Announces Key Economic Team Appointments**
WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. - President-elect Donald Trump has revealed his picks for crucial economic roles, choosing seasoned Washington insiders to steer pivotal sectors such as income taxes and tariffs. On Tuesday, Trump announced Jamieson Greer as his selection for U.S. Trade Representative, and Kevin Hassett as the director of the White House National Economic Council.
Acknowledging the significance of restoring public confidence in the economy, Trump’s appointments of Greer and Hassett underscore his strategic choice of individuals with substantial experience in economic policy. Greer, an international trade attorney, previously served as chief of staff to Robert Lighthizer, Trump's former trade representative known for his skepticism toward free trade. Greer’s role at the King & Spalding law firm and his instrumental part in negotiating tariff impositions during Trump's first term highlight his expertise.
If confirmed, Greer will handle negotiations with foreign governments regarding trade agreements and disputes, along with participation in global trade organizations like the World Trade Organization (WTO). His nomination aligns with Trump’s agenda to implement significant new tariffs, including a proposed 25% tax on goods from Canada and Mexico, and a 10% tariff on Chinese imports.
Kevin Hassett, slated to direct the White House National Economic Council, emerges as a staunch advocate for tax reductions. Hassett, who served as chairman of the Council of Economic Advisers during Trump’s first term, is expected to renew and expand the 2017 tax cuts, many of which are set to expire after 2025. Backed by his academic credentials, including a doctorate from the University of Pennsylvania, and his tenure at the American Enterprise Institute, Hassett brings a well-rounded economic perspective.
Hassett's past work received commendation from Trump, who referred to him as a “true friend” upon his departure in 2019. He later joined the Hoover Institution and returned briefly to assist with the pandemic response. In his new role, Hassett will confront the challenge of balancing deficit pressures with the goal of tax reduction and inflation control.
These appointments mark a critical phase in Trump’s preparation for his second term, emphasizing continuity in addressing economic issues through experienced leadership.
