In response to intelligence indicating a potential Iranian threat to assassinate former President Donald Trump, the U.S. Secret Service has recently intensified his security detail, according to three officials familiar with the matter. This increase in protection comes in the wake of ongoing threats from Iran following the assassination of Iranian military officer Qasem Soleimani in January 2020.

Trump's campaign has announced that he will be holding his first rally since the attempted assassination in Grand Rapids, Michigan, on Saturday. Joining him at the event will be JD Vance, marking their first rally together. The rally, set to take place in an indoor venue, will be closely monitored by security personnel.

Following the recent shooting incident, the FBI and Department of Homeland Security (DHS) have issued a bulletin to law enforcement agencies nationwide, cautioning them about the possibility of "follow-on or retaliatory" attacks during upcoming events related to the 2024 presidential election. The bulletin, released on Monday night as the Republican National Convention commenced in Milwaukee, urged vigilance and prompt reporting of any suspicious activities.

"The FBI and DHS remain concerned... particularly given that individuals in some online communities have threatened, encouraged, or referenced acts of violence in response to the attempted assassination," stated the bulletin.

Law enforcement agencies at the local, state, and federal levels, along with their partners, have been advised to stay alert and maintain heightened security measures in light of the potential risks associated with the ongoing election season.

The safety and security of political candidates and their events are paramount, especially in the face of escalated threats. The Secret Service, FBI, and DHS continue to work diligently to mitigate risks and ensure the protection of all individuals involved in the political process.
